IT'S COMING RIGHT AT US!  SHOOT IT! SHOOT IT!

Sorry, just channeling the cops.

As a person who has "owned" two pit bulls, this is a welcome story.

Dogs of any breed will become bitey if not trained well.  The unfortunate things for Pits is their brute strength, and the assholes that that strength attracts.

My Chihuahua would have been put down if it weren't cute when she gets mad. She has the attitude and tenacity of a great white and the jaw strength of a newborn.

Well, obviously a dog has no concept of GPAs nor pomp nor circumstance.  But it's cool to imagine the grieving dog seeing his buddy's friends and knowing that they'd thought to invite him to remember their loss. Because its quite possible that he did know those two things were somehow connected, and dogs are smart.

In fairness, pit bulls  are inherently more violent than other breeds.

It's just a statistical trend rather than a universal compulsion, so the ones that are properly trained are still fine.  Service dogs are trained so thoroughly they're the dog equivalent of a half-dozen PhDs and a seat on the committee for Nature.

Despite my ordinary disdain for conspiracy theories I have a personal one...

I think that the biggest push for pit bull bans are actually similar to gun control. Drug dealers often use brutalized pit bulls to guard their stash houses.  It's effective against rivals and cops.  If a cop breaks down a door when you are in the house the dog can give you enough time to flush the drugs or make a run for it. It's not a public safety measure so much as it's an  attempt to ensure that the police can continue to seize large amounts of assets from the populace.  This is the same reason that safe injection sites, which have been shown to reduce drug use, are largely panned by police and law and order types.  They don't want drug use to go down, it's far too lucrative to continue allowing criminals to collect vast sums of money from the lower classes and then collect it from them.

Well, pit bulls also can lock their jaws, which I'm guessing sucks if you get bit by one. I'm guessing that if you get bit by a service dog, you probably asked for it (aka, picking on the dog's owner)! It's a rarity, I'm sure.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm talking about, like many guard dog breeds they're bred to bite things and not let go.  This can make them a bit more dangerous untrained, too, since nipping at people is how pretty much all dogs play and that can result in something much more serious from a pit bull than, say, a Labrador.

Once they're grown up and you've done the requisite smacking them with the paper to teach them that people aren't dogs and chewing isn't an acceptable means of social interaction, breed is a much more academic distinction since no dog's going to bite you unless it's been abused or you provoke it directly.

// I think this is one of the reasons retriever breeds and shepherd breeds are among the more popular pet types, as they're bred to not bite down ever and to train quickly respectively.  Pit bulls aren't really a popular breed by choice so much as that they're an aggressively healthy strain with no problems hanging out in the wild, so strays/rescues tend to pick up the breed within a generation or two.

How are JRTs evil? Pains in the ass, yes. Too gorram smart for their own good, definitely. But cute, sweet, and occasionally protective. Mine is the laziest dog ever, too, so long as I'm home to sleep near. He does tend to get into things if anything edible is left out and I don't crate him when I leave, like a stick of butter, an entire batch of cookies...
