Well yeah. North Korea uses a lot of old tech, including WWII era propaganda.

Japan's moder propaganda is FAAAR superior to that archaic tech.

Google translate of sales page for the coffee table book

FTA "Take the case of nudism: At some schools, both the pupils and teachers wore only underpants or trousers to become physically stronger. A photo from 1943 shows that even a principal was working almost naked at his desk."

I've seen some of those vintage photos before. I always wondered the reasoning behind the stripped down exercise routines depicted in them.

Now one of my father's stories makes better sense. One of his research scientists was related to the founder of Honda. He said that the guy mentioned that Honda showed up nude at a couple of company meetings to promote ("free thought? Courage?") to promote company morale.

Well, they WERE an insane military dictatorship bent on dominating all of Asia ("East Asian Co-prosperity Sphere"). This is a country that sent young conscripts on suicide missions using custom planes and submarines. A country that made a state religion out of Shinto, which was party a mix of folk beliefs and heavily syncretic with Buddhism until then, and made the emperor into an object of official worship much like they treat the Kims in the DPRK.

So yeah, there would be similarities. It's sad that people need to be reminded how crazy it was at the time. Surprised? Why would you be?

Largely by that time, American forces were beginning to bomb them, largely at will. Now it's okay to second guess the motives, but Harry was in favor of wiping them from the face of the earth. destroy their will to fight, and keep going. Seems like it was overdoing it, but it wasn't. Here, have a blanket.

Actually, many types of opium poppy are sold for their flowers. Often they call them "bread seed poppies" or give them dubious scientific names to cover the fact that they are opium poppies. In fact, edible poppy seeds are opium poppy seeds and supposedly you can grow poppies with them (not sure how they would compare to what you can get from countless gardening catalogs).

Michael Pollan wrote an article on growing opium poppies that is on his website as well, an interesting read if you feel like growing poppies. They are very, very pretty.

I thought the god-emperor thing started long before the Tojo regime took over, like at least during the period of opening, maybe even earlier.

The god emperor thing goes WAY back to the founding of Japan as a state. The Kojiki can be read as a form of propoganda for the Nara polity that evolved into modern Japan.

The thing is, the actual shrines that are common? Inari shrines are no.1. Not very related to emperor worship. By the Edo era, the emperor had become a total figurehead. Meiji politics brought the emperor back into power and view, but the depth of reverence for the emperor was not necessarily that deep. In the Taisho era, it even seemed like Japan was moving toward a more open and democratic system... Then they went full retard.

When it's in written form (as opposed to being spoken in person, with inflection and so on) people only correctly identify intended sarcasm about half the time.

Well, considering that Japan was (and is) a nation with comparatively small reserves of natural resources (wood, oil, etc.) it would make sense to acclimate the children to being cold, thus making them "stronger" AND saving heat/fuel and cloth/clothing resources for the war effort.

But that's a strictly logical/economical perspective, and they're not particularly popular.
