Odd phrasing, but you'd think the one would lead to the other. Frankly, in a career sense, STL was probably the worst place to be drafted. Tough D-Line to get snaps in.

Sam strikes me as a guy who will end up on a practice squad somewhere if he plays respectably in pre-season. I doubt he makes the Rams 53-man roster, though he'll probably make it through the first round of cuts. I bet he gets cut and picked up somewhere else.

I think we're well past the saturation point for this story. If there is any backlash from players, it won't be against Sam. It will be against the media's incessant pestering about what they think of the situation. Which is probably one reason Sam landed with the Rams. No contender would want a distraction like that. A coach on the hotseat wouldn't want to add attention. But Fischer is still new with the Rams and they aren't expected to do anything with that division, so they can take a flyer on the guy. Still, I would love for the Patriots to have drafted them just to see Belichick destroy some journalist from some non-sports media outlet asking some inane question about Sam. "Coach, how do you feel about having an openly gay man on the roster for the first time in history?" Belichick: "..." "Coach?" Belichick: "Is that a football question?" Reporter: "Well, this is a huge, historic moment for the NFL, and I just-" Belichick: "Why are you still talking to me?" Reporter: "I-" Belichick: "{stares}"

If he excels, he's the kind of guy Williams likes on third and long. He had one good move in college, but it's great for pass rush on third down.

The problem is that there are already, at the very very least, 2-3 guys on that roster who are pass rush specialists (not that pass rush is all they do, but that they're VERY good at it). And a near 5-second 40 time just isn't fast enough for an edge rush specialist (in the sense, this time, that he really is only an edge rush specialist) in the NFL, let alone the NFC West.

The Rams play the Browns in preseason.

Sam and Manziel met last season. Missouri won 28-21, Manziel was sacked twice; Sam shared in one of them.

You see what I'm trying to say here.

i have a funny (to me, at least) clip of Artie Lange on Adam Carolla, where Artie starts riffing on that Liberace movie, and then how in real life, Liberace apparently claimed he lost his manginity to a Green Bay Packer.

They lay the music bed of NFL Films, and then ARtie in a Lombardi impression, is like, "what the hell's goin on out there?  We're trying to run the counter trey and everyone's sucking cock!  I'm trying to score a touchdown and you're blowing Liberace!  Everybody's sucking and farking out there!  We got a football game to win and you're farking Liberace in the ass!  What the hell are you doing out there!  You cant fark Liberace on the field!"

it maybe doesn't translate but in the audio it is hilarious.

/yes, morality police, i know Lombardi's brother was gay.  spare me your "yeah man, that's really not funny, his brother was gay, mmmmkay?" rebukes.

Thing is, football is a business, and this guy is going to sell tickets, jerseys, and merchandise if he makes the team. Every team in the NBA has had an unspoken rule of keeping a couple of white guys on the bench at all times because the fans like to see it, even if there is better black talent available. I would be shocked if he doesn't end up on a roster. If not the Rams, then one of the other 31 GMs will see the dollar signs and pick him up.

Remember the joke, we know the world is ending soon when the President is black and the MVP of the NBA is white?

I laugh way too hard at this.

Anyhow. I'm hoping he gets a year or so on a practice squad at least. He's strong enough a person and smart enough to learn well, he could be a decent linebacker.

ladodger34: rynthetyn: Rent Party: Tommy Moo: Shame Us: Sam strikes me as a guy who will end up on a practice squad somewhere if he plays respectably in pre-season. I doubt he makes the Rams 53-man roster, though he'll probably make it through the first round of cuts. I bet he gets cut and picked up somewhere else.

You mean the 31 GMs that just had multiple opportunities to score all that sweet, sweet, homo cash and didn't?

The NFL generates about $12 billion a year in revenue.  Anything Mike Sam adds to that pot is like a raindrop in the ocean.   Losing games will lose you fans (See: Jacksonville).

Those 31 NFL GMs just saw how many jerseys he sold in 24 hours.

IIRC, the profits from jersey sales go directly into the revenue sharing pot.

Yup.  Most money is shared in the NFL.  The money that isn't is generated primarily from stadium revenues...  i.e. butts in seats and beer.   Which is why no GM is going to put a bad player on their roster.  If the team sucks, it impacts their bottom line.

Por que tan serioso: A Fark Handle: Nabb1: I think we're well past the saturation point for this story.

this just in; michael sam will be issued a helmet when he reports to camp.  it's unclear at this time whether it will be a riddell, riddell revolution, or a schutt helmet.  more details to follow as they become available...

More like issuing his little purple helmet into his boyfriends tight end amiright?

Darn right.

Mateorocks: Will this also be his number when he plays for the Alouettes later this year?

Except the Cowboys, if memory serves me. For some reason the league lets them get away with not participating in revenue sharing, at least for merchandise. Although to be fair, I don't see Cowboys fans as the best target group to market "a new era of NFL tolerance" to.
