Very cool, breathtaking, really.

The One Thing holding full-on AI back is that they still have to use position markers for the optics to discern an object's physical properties. Once that's figured out, all bets are off.

It simplifies things. A computer can detect edges and contrast like our eye does but not in real time without all of the processing power. It also is pretty tough to get a computer to focus; they are easily distracted by flashing lights or philosophical quandary.

That's why it's still holding AI back. Someone or something still has to digitize analog objects. When it can play in our sensory world without help, well, that's basically it.
