Has anyone gotten Greg Lake a ladder yet?

I think it would be hilarious if we sent him a ladder.  I'm sure there are enough ELP fans out there that we could probably send him about a thousand ladders.

He also designed some pretty terrifying dining room sets:

Jello Biafra has a really amusing spoken word album where he talks at great length about his obscenity trial over the Geiger art that was used on Frankenchrist.

I think it was called "High Priest of Harmful Matter"

It is still the first thing I think about when I hear about Geiger.  Right before Alien and the ELP album

a particular individual: bikerbob59: I had that album.  Yes, I said album.

An album is just a collection of songs. A CD or tape can be an album.

A CD or tape is just a recording of music.  The old school vinyl record included works of visual art.  The case in point here is Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.  The visual element was done Giger.

(When I Play Sid Meier's ALPHA CENTAURI I always change the name of New Jerusalem base to Lake Emerson Palmer,)

I was at work listening to ELP's Brain Salad Surgery. The CD had a bonus track with an interview. They started talking about the cover. It was too graphic and had to be airbrushed before it could be released upon an unsuspecting world. I was writing an email while listening. My fingers dutifully typed "penis" when the word was mentioned on the audio track.  Fortunately, I noticed before sending.

You sound single.

I was dating this hot hairdresser back in the late 80's and she found my coffee table book of Giger's art. As she was leafing through I was commenting how cool it was and she gave me the strangest look. Never saw her again after that night. I guess dead babies and penetrating machinery is a turn off.

You didn't miss much, in my experience hairdressers are good for about two bangs before they get boring. Turns out women that cut other people's hair typically just aren't very interesting.

Shame about Giger though. Guy was delightfully creepy.

Judging by the responses here, he quite accurately knew his audience: "My paintings seem to make the strongest impression on people who are, well, who are crazy," Giger said in a 1979 interview with Starlog magazine. "If they like my work they are creative ... or they are crazy."

RIP Twisted, crazy dude whose work I've loved for years without ever knowing who did it.

Rev. Skarekroe: Every bit of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy art from the last 30 years owes a little something to Giger.

Oh so this.

His arresting designs almost single-handledly stopped visual innovation in SF film and media cold in their
tracks for the better part of a generation, and a good 90% of what's still out there is basically a pastiche
of his stuff.

gfid: Still, you turn me on....

First thing I thought of - probably not even on that album.  I can't remember.

It is on that album. That album also includes one of the worst rhymes in the history of rock music, IMO:

Every day a little sadder
A little madder
Someone get me a ladder

-Greg Lake

/still love the album. They should've left all the lyrics up to Peter Sinfield though

Ever since I laid eyes on this guy's work in the 70's I have known that they were created by someone with a tortured mind.

I later found out a little bit about Giger and his life - that this guy had a lifetimes worth of night terrors every time his head rested on a pillow.  That he was barely functional to where he had to be taken care of by friends and loved ones. Never really "liked" his work, but always admired that much artistic focus in someone with so much pain.  It was visually stunning and perfectly illustrated the mental landscape of fear hidden deep in everyone's mind.

I am thankful that, despite the lifetime of sorrow, he had the ability to channel that horror with a blank canvas and an airbrush.

RIP - you can finally rest now without being crushed by terror.

People with his level of creative torture are heavily medicated and locked up these days. for 'their own safety' and society is denied their gifts. Very sad.

Nope, I haven't heard it. I was fanatical about ELP between the ages of 10-12 and had every one of their albums, up to and including Love Beach. I grew out of it after a while though. I started listening to them again a few years ago.

He also designed the Sil creature for the film Species.  I recall him saying in an interview that he was more satisfied with her design, than he was for the Zenomorph in Alien.  Unfortunately, most of the pictures available online are rather NSFW, so this picture from the original DVD cover will have to do.
