(Jalopnik)   As much as anyone hates to defend airlines, turns out will.i.am was just trying to scam into a high-end lounge while traveling on a coach ticket, and was upset when his cunning cheapskate plan was foiled   (flightclub.jalopnik.com) divider line 50

He flies coach? Is he broke or just cheap?

IIRC, he would've had to pay to get into even the United Club with his plan (unless he was supposed to be on an international flight)... so, yeah, definitely a jackass.

I like that he seemed to confuse 'being a member of an air miles program' with 'buying a first class seat'.

That's a very nice lounge - great food especially the flatbread things; however you usually have to swipe your boarding pass to get in so you go lucky!

I wasn't even trying to sneak in, I thought my ticket gave me access. I just happened to shoulder-surf behind somebody when I first went in. It was a long layover, so I eventually went to stretch my legs around the terminal, and the guy at the front desk remembered me from earlier so he buzzed me in even though my pass wouldn't scan (and apologized for the scanner not working. Never looked at it to see I was just coach).

Anyone who does this to a classic song deserves to fly coach for the rest of his life. And I include Sergio Mendes in this as well.

In all honesty, rich people do tend to get a lot of nice things for less money than poor people would have to pay.  For example, some high-end credit cards come with rather expensive annual fees, but give perks like frequent flyer miles and heavily discounted access to airport lounges that (as long as you use them) more than make up for those fees.

I am anxiously awaiting the "Where is Delta Flight 236? (It's Delayed By Mechanical Problems) LOST LUGGAGE REMIX", complete with 48 minutes of silence in the middle of the track so you can tweet how horrible the airline is while you wait to find out if your luggage is in the same city as you.

I only flew a few times and most of those was through my work, so I don't even remember the price of the ticket, but what is the difference in price between 1st class and coach and what do you get for the difference?

I believe the line is "Free to those that can afford it, very expensive to those that can't."

For example, some high-end credit cards come with rather expensive annual fees, but give perks like frequent flyer miles and heavily discounted access to airport lounges that (as long as you use them) more than make up for those fees.

Yup. For the hell of it I was recently seeing what I would get if I upgraded my Signature Visa (no annual fee) to Visa Black ($500/year). About the only new thing I would get that I care about would be access to lots of airport lounges. Since I only fly about twice a year these days it's absolutely not worth it. 20 years ago, though, it would have been a great deal.

If you read the statement from United, he was not in GLOBAL first. In the US most domestic first class tickets don't entitle you to lounge access... so he was not necessarily flying coach.

swaniefrmreddeer He flies coach? Is he broke or just cheap?

There's posters upthread that do a far better job of explaining this. With his producer points, money is no object unless it's all on fur-lined sinks-he may just have a Wesley Snipes,/Martin Lawrence level of eccentricity.  He could easily write off 1st Class...unless there were no seats available.

That depends.  On domestic US flights, First Class usually gets you a comfortable seat, free drinks, and you generally get treated like a human being.

International is a whole different beast.  A coach ticket from Los Angeles to London is about $1300.  First class however, with a full sleeper bed/ seat and all the luxuries runs about $8000.  But that First Class cabin has maybe what, two dozen seats as opposed to the hundreds in cattle car rows in back?

Back in the day when Bill Gates was only worth a handful of billions he'd fly coach.  That was to prevent other execs at Microsoft from expensing first class fares by saying "the boss does it" though.  I've no idea what this guy's excuse was other than it may have been a last minute flight and first was full.
