(Boston.com)   Depending on who you talk to, the infamous Black Mass that was to happen at Harvard was either called off because no one would host it, or looked suspiciously like a normal bar playing Black Sabbath   (boston.com) divider line 48

Awww, I would have been down to go to that.  And The Middle East seems like a good place to hold it.  They've got that big underground venue.

They sound Paranoid.

2014-05-13 11:53:21 AM
I'd show up if a place was playing Sabbath.  Hell, I show up at enough places already that aren't and go ahead and fix it.

The joke is that them sitting around drinking beer was the mass.

It's because it was black isn't it?

Hong Kong is a good venue for such an event.

That place.....*shudder*

Damn, I read that as 'Black Mesa' and got all tingly.

Just like students at Black Masses

I was wondering what the hell this was.  So it was going to be a re-enactment of a Satantic ritual for a cultural studies group?  I don't see what the big deal is.

i only liked the idea because it caused a significant ground swell in catholic butt-hurt also I love the song "I am Satan by Paul Gilbert"

/and I love satan

The current president of Harvard is Drew Faust.
I'm surprised they couldn't work out some kind of a deal.

I also could have made a Venom "in League with Satan" reference

I just hate that the church crowd will feel victorious about it. I'm to the point now where I've had so much of the Lord's Holy Knob Gobblers that I want them to feel like the downtrodden victims they pretend so hard to be,

If man-ray were still around.... hmmm, nah - they sound too mainstream for that place.

2014-05-13 12:09:28 PM
this seems like a fun kind of thing for RHPS-types and theater nerds. i bet a small troupe could get regular gigs opening for metal bands and doing goth clubs. or a monthly full-moon party at the local indie stage theater, with bbq and beer.

the Gnostic Mass would be fun, and isn't too difficult.

A Black Mass is just longer than a regular Mass.

There would really only be one place with the proper ambiance to hold it:
paranormala.com

yes those are all human bones, yes real ones.

the thing that confused me about the whole plan to do this "black mass" is that this was supposedly part of some sort of historical recreation project and even the organizers freely admits there never really WAS such a thing a as black mass except in the fevered imaginations of various witch hunters.  So exactly HOW were they going to "recreate" it?  Especially since most versions generally had the participants commit all seven of the deadly sins during the ceremony

There is a little asterisk beside the Freedom of Religion part that references the following footnote :

Christians are all for religious freedom as long as it benefits them.

according to a friend of mine who's all excited about this, it was an affront to the Catholics because it openly mocks the Catholic mass

Wait, so this wasn't even going to be a modern LaVeyan ceremony?

Conspiracy time: What if this was all a massive "Cultural Studies" project on how much butthurt holding a Black Mass would cause?

I was just going to say that they got a bunch of Christians scared and butthurt over nothing, so their recreation went just about perfectly.

Religion is CONSTANTLY "recreating" things that never happened or trying to "bring back" tenets and traditions of faith that are brand new.

The other thing about Black Mass is whether you take the original fantasy (as written by christians) or the pagan ceremonies they were insulting/misrepresenting at the time, it's hard to get that many ladies (let alone good-looking ones) to show up for a naked orgy.

Ouch. I'm too fat to crowdsurf without killing people but I'll keep that in mind.
