Happy Birthday Stevie.

I did think you were at least 10 years older than 64, but no offense is meant by that. It just seems you have been famous for as long as I can remember, but now you're only 11 years older than I am...

She nailed it... I'll give her that. I always thought she was a pretty hot mom, that singing voice is just a bonus.

But subby, ANYBODY can blindside Stevie Wonder.

And has anyone noticed that he is looking more and more like this every time you see him? He should take up jogging. Parkour, maybe?

You know it was years before I knew that it was a Stevie song and not a Chili Peppers song. Both versions make me have a happy!

He started soooo young, 11 iirc. I remember when he no longer wanted to be referred to as 'Little Stevie' Wonder.

Here's a Youtube link of him singing "Fingertips" when he was 14 ( ' 64), and crushing an harmonica.

I seem to remember on that song's original recording (at least the first one I heard), he came out for an encore and left one of the musicians (maybe the bass player, I've forgotten) in the dust... You can hear the guy calling: What key?'  lol.

Subby mentioned "blindsided"...which is actually pretty close to the truth in relation to an horrific incident in Stevie's life (and one I was completely unaware of until I saw his biography).

Stevie was in the passenger seat of a car during a drive, when a log truck in front of the car had a log come loose.  The log shot through the windshield of the car and struck Stevie a glancing blow to the head...it damned near took his head off.  By a major miracle he survived with this musical abilities intact.

But that's why he looks a lot different in photos taken before the accident than after.

As I said, I had never heard anything about this incident....and as a musician for many decades I have a decent amount of knowledge related to the subject.

gah. another 2m of searching and I found the recording. You can hear 'What key, what key?' around the 2:26 mark.

He is a musical treasure..I'd really like to hear him do some more duets and collaborations like he did in the 70's and 80's, but it would be hard to find some current talent that he could work with.

i was watching the BIO special about stevie just a few days ago. he always seems older to me for the same reason, except i'm only 38. thing is, though, he signed on at motown when he was something like 11 years old. first hit before he was a teenager. so he's been at this pretty much his whole life

Phyllicia Rashad had a pretty impressive resume before Cosby, where she was actually cast against type. So I don't think her abilities 'blindsided' anyone.

And check out some of the talent on 'Songs in the key of life' sometime.

i loved that show when it was on, only when they tried the cousin pam thing did it start to slide.

Can you imagine being the kids at the time in the cast?  it's one thing to get an acting gig as a child, but then to have all that talent come through as guest stars over the years.   Amazing stuff.

I'd love to see the actual video from this, his first appearance on SNL in 1983, but NBC has obliterated all reference to it on the web. He played Overjoyed two years before it was released and it just leaves me breathless every time I listen to it. He got like a two-minute standing ovation.

I own one of the orange amps that Stevie Wonder used to own in the 70's.  I can't prove that, but I believe it to be true.
