I was at my 3-year old's soccer practice last week and at least half the parents there stared or talked into their phones 75% of the practice.  I'm highly supportive of the convenience the technology brings and to each his own...but I did find myself wondering what the hell was so important to everyone.  Granted, soccer practice for 3 and 4 year old kids is pretty much the coach trying to heard the kids in one area most of the time but still...it's more entertaining that anything on the phone.

What if you only check it once, but the check lasts for 16 hours?

Have you played "Virtual 3yo Soccer practice"? It's really realistic the way you have to herd the kids. Or the even more popular "Sim Soccer Practice Dad"? Your character is a parent at a Soccer practice and you have to make your person sit there and enjoy himself without getting arrested.

I only check mine like 59 times a day, so I'm good

I don't "check" it all that much. That's what I have notifications for.

If you keep track of how many times per day you check your phone, you may have OCD.

I rely on my phone as much as the next guy.  But unless I'm actually expecting a response for something, I rarely check it.  I also leave it on vibrate pretty much all of the time because I cannot STAND musical notifications.

My wife gets pissed when I miss her calls.

I check if I have OCD 38 times per day.  So far so good.

I had a friend once go to the doctor because she was worried she was becoming a hypochondriac. Think about it.

I think you both mean CDO. It's the same thing as OCD just with the letters in the proper order.

It's a great second-screen for your smartphone.  Apps like Glance and MusicBoss really cut down on how often I have to pick up and unlock my phone to do something.

It's not a Dick Tracy watch, which disappoints some people.  Not sure what they expect for $150.

Aside:  I don't recall people carrying around bags full of quarters to make pay-phone calls back in the day. To this day I don't know why "talking on the phone" has become so popular. Also, so many folks like to text each other but of them the majority don't seem to be able to spell or even put together literate sentences. And rarely do any of them send an actual email.

75% of the time...at least half the parents.

And I don't really care if I am in the minority.  I have a smart phone (S4...and a tablet also Android).  Hell, I write code for the damn thing.  For all I know, some of those parents may be chasing their kid around at home all day and practice is a break for them (I doubt it but still).  Personally, I think, in my opinion, the cute, funny things my only son does during his practices are orders of magnitude more important that almost anything on the phone outside of work or an emergency.  But again, that's me.
