Well, that or dead.

That tree is immense.  Even idiots can see trees.  This family is either deaf, dumb, AND blind, or something else was going on that the failporter didn't include.

Couldn't see the forest because of the falling trees.

Look at the picture and it all makes sense.  The driver swerved towards the falling tree, hit the rocks, got the front and quarter panel pretty good.  The impact swatted some rocks perpendicularly away from the direction of impact.  Those rocks landed across the street like baseballs.  And finally the tree failed to bend the A pillars much less break the windshield.

CSB time.... this past Christmas, we had some pretty nasty weather. I took my wife and youngest over to Christmas Eve dinner at my parents, who live in a rural area, and when we were returning home, it was pitch black out. About a mile down the road from my parents, I noticed the taillights become obscured and realized something was wrong... but the roads were complete crap, so braking hard wasn't an option, unless I wanted to end up in the ditch. I managed to slow down and veer into the oncoming lane in time to mostly miss the tree that had fallen across the road. As we passed it, we experienced a horrible sound as hundreds of treetips coated in ice crashed over the car. We pulled over behind the car that had been ahead of us, and inspected both cars with my handy Cree I keep in the glove box, and amazingly, no damage to either car (The other car had been hit in the trunk). The tree covered most of the road, with the big limbs in the southbound lane we had been traveling... we stayed long enough to wave some cars away before the police arrived to take over.

Kinda wish I had a dashcam to capture the event. Probably still not a bad idea... this isn't Russia, but it is Michigan.

The story is missing some details, like did the tree fall before they got there and she drove into the tree (against the curb at that, which would be very stupid) or the tree fell directly at the moment they got there.  Either way, if she had been to the right, may not have gotten any damage at all.

This reminds me of the woman and child killed when a tree fell not far from me.  They were the only two, sitting up front of course, and the tree landed directly on them.  There was no possible way the mom could've done anything.  Her husband tried suing the state for the tree, I doubt he won anything.

'One casualty was treated on scene and a second was taken to the University Hospital of Wales with injuries not believed to be serious.'

is there some new definition of 'casualty' that I'm not aware of?  Isn't the word usually used for someone who has died?

Nope. It can refer to the merely injured.

In fairness, Subby et al., they didn't "not notice." They knew they'd been hit, but not how close they came to being crushed until they got out and could see the situation better.

It doesn't make you stupid, it's merely an indicator that your car is big enough.

They buried one survivor, treated one casualty by painting DEAD on it, and the one who protested being put on the cart they sent to the hospital so they could get him properly on the cart.
