(KSFY Sioux Falls)   Small group of University of North Dakota students wear t-shirts with a Native American in full headdress chugging from a beer bong with the words "Siouxper Drunk" on them. Was that wrong? Should I have not done that?   (ksfy.com) divider line 107

Well, the school's mascot was the Fighting Sioux before the NCAA forced them to change it (and the way the NCAA went about it left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, especially considering the school had the blessing of one of the local Sioux tribes to use the name).  I'd wager that this wasn't intended to make fun of the problems with alcoholism that the Native American population has, but was rather meant as a 'fark you, we still consider this our mascot, nyah nyah nyah' sort of thing.

It's in bad taste considering the larger picture of how it could have been interpreted, but I'd be surprised if there was any malicious intent in it.

It's funny because Native Americans are drunks!

No, just one or two per news-cycle. Outrage is good fuel to drive page-views, and it's easy to provoke.

Now I'm admitting Iowa, I owe a lot to you
'Cause I come from Nebraska to find Sioux City Sue.

I'm gonna rope and tie her up, I'll use my old laso
I'm gonna put my brand on, my sweet Sioux City Sue

Sioux City Sue, Sioux City Sue
Your hair is red, your eyes are blue
I'd swap my horse and dog for you
Sioux City Sue. Sioux City Sue

I've been told that as someone with Irish roots, I should be outraged over phrases like "paddy wagon" and "Irish twins". I'm really not.

Being Irish, I guess I should resent the Notre Dame nickname, "The Fighting Irish." After all, how long do you think nicknames like "The Bargaining Jews" or "The Murdering Italians" would last? Only the ironic Irish could be so naively honest. I get the feeling that Notre Dame came real close to naming itself "The F*****' Drunken, Thick-skulled, Brawling, Short-dicked Irish."

Never too early for George Carlin to weigh in.

I like how the tfa says the stereotype is so offensive, then goes on to say 20% of the reservation has organ damage from being the stereotype. Seems less stereotype and more truth to me.

I drove through the Navajo Res last summer near 4 Corners. You could have filled a dump truck every quarter-mile with the empties by the side of the road. There is some serious drinking going on there.

lol - first thing I thought of too.  I was never a big fan, but was she offensive?  I guess if she was, it was lost on me.

I'm still trying to come to terms with that Swedish chef on the Muppets.  Not sure if it was funny or horribly offensive.

Meh - I'll take it easy and say that Jim Henson making fun of my ancestors culture was funny.

UND is a pretty hard drinking school.  I wonder if these students just thought they were describing themselves and their goal for Springfest and never thought beyond that first step and what others would think of their shirt logo.  If we're thinking in stereotypes- beer bongs fit the stereotype of college students and not the Sioux or any of the rest of the First Nations who are saddled with the drunk stereotype.  Even if we give these jokers the benefit of the doubt and assume this was done out of naivete and not out of malice, they clearly have a gaping hole in their education.

Nah, you know who doesn't get that "joke?" White people in the South who actually live where there are lots of black people. Because those white people routinely eat fried chicken and watermelon, too, and don't see how that's funny. The whole "fried chicken and watermelon" stereotype comes from the Midwest and Northeast, where those were exotic foods brought there by the African-American diaspora during the Jim Crow era.

That's just a silly statement.   Are there any schools which have student bodies made up of 18-21 year olds that are NOT "hard drinking"?

Lazy Media:Nobody going to point out that "Sioux" is a derogatory name given the Lakota and Dakota people by their tribal enemies? Nobody?

That the name is derived from Cree isn't the subject of much debate, but the derogatory connotations of the origin terms is a subject of some debate.   We also use the term German which was a name given tribes their enemies- the Romans and not  what they called themselves.  It's not an unusual thing for tribal and national groups to have less than accurate names- the English are named for just one of the invading tribes- the Angels another name with Roman origins.  We also use British which is derived from the Britons another Roman name while the Saxons live on only in the term Anglo-Saxon.  Some folks use the term Sioux when speaking English or referring to the entire Nation and Lakota, Dakota or Nakota when speaking their ancestral language.  Whatever they prefer is what I would use- it's common courtesy to respect their choices.

Somebody always gets offended these days,  no matter what the theme, name or t-shirt.

So what is in a name is pretty boring shiat.

gifd:  That's just a silly statement.   Are there any schools which have student bodies made up of 18-21 year olds that are NOT "hard drinking"?

Ever heard of BYU? The state of North Dakota has the highest per capita consumption of alcohol in the US with neighboring northern plains and midwest states not far behind so it's not surprising that UND downs its more than its fair share of the suds.

2014-05-13 08:36:41 AM
Its not news every time a 19 year old does something stupid in the midwest.
