My mom didn't used to like to wear her seat belt. One day, long ago, she was in late pregnancy with my brother and putting my 2 year old self into the car to go somewhere. For some reason that day I chose to pitch a fit because she wasn't wearing her seat belt. I didn't normally do this, so I've been told, so me doing that was out of character. She eventually put her belt on to satisfy me and quiet me down.

On that drive she got into a car accident. Rather, someone hit her from behind. If she wasn't wearing her seat belt the impact would have drove the steering wheel into my little brother, probably killing him. My out of character fit over safety saved my brother's life and possibly my mother's.

I love my brother dearly. Best tantrum I ever threw.

I like how the article mentioned that men are worse drivers than even the pregnant women
As a woman in the second trimester, it's awakened a hellbeast of carsickness for me. I can't even ride shotgun without gagging.

Nothing wrong with a study that investigates a common stereotype, provided it is done well.

Sometimes, there is empirical support for the stereotype. This doesn't make the study or the author(s) evil.

Driving stereotypes can get really weird.  There are stereotypes about where people are from and what kind of car they drive.  I drive a BMW.  Whenever I drive aggressively, I know people are saying "look at this asshole in the BMW."  I drove just as aggressively in my '87 Olds Cutlass Cierra, but nobody thinks you're an asshole in that car.   They think you're a geezer.

I work with a guy that is convinced the people from a neighboring county drive worse than than the people in his county.  I just can't see the difference.

And I also think it's odd that for all the stereotypes white people pile on black guys, nobody says that they can't drive.  So they got that going for them... which is nice.

Suggesting that the physical and emotional changes brought on by bucketloads of hormones could in any way impair a woman's ability to safely operate a vehicle in traffic is disgustingly sexist.

The authors of this study need to check their privilege.

The only time I've ever just blown through a red light (completely by accident of course), was when I was pregnant. Second trimester, too. So anecdotally.... yup. Just my luck there was a cop there too.

Pregnancy brain is a real thing, and it's pretty awesome. I tricked my wife into going to Arby's twice in one day, and she's a vegetarian.

About a year ago I had just started dating this chick. We were on like our fourth date and things were going awesomely. Anyway we come to this four-way stop, and when it's my turn I begin to go, when suddenly the car to my left lurches into the intersection and then slams to a stop. I made a comment like, 'Not so good at the paying attention and the driving, huh lady?'

In response, the girl in the car with me goes, 'Well she looks Indian, sooo...'

I was crestfallen, as I had really liked this girl. I made a comment to the effect of, 'it's not her ethnicity that bothers me as much as her almost broadsiding my car.'

I must have had just enough tone in my voice because I could tell she considered and then bit back a response. I decided to keep going in seeing her, maybe this was a fluke thing. Then a few weeks later the Paula Deen thing happened and it was on TV while she was busy getting ready to go out. She goes, 'What happened? I don't understand.', and I said, 'Turns out Paula Deen likes using the N-word.', and she goes straight into that tired old 'Well I think if they don't like that word being used they shouldn't use it themselves...' bit. Sigh.

I said, 'Do you and your girlfriends ever refer to each other as 'my biatches'?'

She opened her mouth to reply but never did say anything. At this point I realized it wasn't going to work and we had the talk.

Well to be fair, if you were that young you wouldn't have remembered the fetus that was to be your brother.  You would have been told stories of "the baby that died" or your parents could have never mentioned it at all.  I somehow stuck a pencil in my eye, fell into an ant pile, and nearly fell down the stairs as a toddler but don't remember jack squat of those 'traumatic memories'.  Few people do and most childhood memories are fantasies of the adult mind.

The point at the end is that that I'm glad that it happened as my brother and I have a very good relationship.

I can't tell if this is a "woosh" moment or a welcometofark.jpg moment.

As much as I love Texas, I can say that from what I've seen, Texans are much bigger asshole on the road than drivers in MI. Far more people swerving around on the highway going 90, passing on the right, not using turn signals etc. And if you're trying to get over to exit or pull out of a side street onto a main road, good luck waiting for someone to let you in. MI sucks in a lot of ways, but asshole drivers were infrequent enough to make them stand out. Down here people will deliberately try to run you off the road or push you onto the shoulder instead of letting you into their lane or even letting you exit the highway. I would bet that's actually why turn signal usage is far less popular down here. When you put your turn signal on, it's like a signal to everyone else to speed up and block you from making a lane change.

there is nothing wrong with passing on the right, for starters.  Either someone is in a big damn hurry, or you are in the wrong lane.

but everything else you describe applies to atlanta as well, especially the turn signal acting as a signal to other drivers to block your maneuver.  I would also like to add the idiots who can't seem to use the acceleration lane to get up to a speed that matches the traffic they are about to merge with.  Yes, I know that 45 mph is the speed limit for the acceleration lane, but good luck merging into 65+ traffic at 45 mph without damn-near causing a pile-up due to 18-wheelers slamming brakes for your merging ass.

No one would need to pass on the right if people would stop (illegally) camping the left lane and then going exactly the speed limit (or less) like some kind of mad man. The left lane is for passing only. I remember they said they'd start enforcing it, but I don't think it ever happened.

2014-05-13 04:52:55 AM
I'm talking about the speed limit being 70, you going with the flow of traffic at 80, and multiple people still going 90, 95 and making 5 or 6 lane changes around traffic in less than a minute, passing anywhere they can squeeze in and not signalling any of it. 1 guy doing it in a Porsche, ok. He's a dick but that's to be expected and you see it everywhere. But I see this shiat every day multiple times on just a few miles of highway. I never really encountered that much in MI but in Texas it's just normal. Half the time I'm wondering if these people learned to drive in Afghanistan.

One of the authors places the blame partly on so-called "pregnancy brain" - the foggy thinking many women report as pregnancy progresses.

Ya gotta be foggy in the brain to get & stay preggers anyhow.
