Boy, wouldn't that be a hell of a thing...

That place sucks.

2014-05-12 10:56:22 PM
I'll bet paying to heat that place is a major pain in the neck. Nevertheless, I'm sure someone will soon stake a claim.

2014-05-12 11:07:22 PM
I bet the cost of re-wiring that will suck you dry

That's a place you could really sink your teeth into.

Would imagine that since people have lived there recently it has electricity and running water.

Just ignore the bats. They won't bother you... much.

Is the manservant's name pronounced Eye-Gore or Eee-Gore?

Sharp thick tree saplings  and lard carefully organized at the entrance and lots of historical paintings of the impalings will fix the vampire wannabes. You could teach daily workshops on how this poor man's crucifixion was used to demoralize the invaders and the people at the same time.  A rich man with a lot of money to waste could cure a lot of stupidity by owning that place.

/ Vlad likely wanted people to stop bothering him, I think a no soliciting sign would be better,

Yeah, I've decided to put the family home up for sale.  I'm moving to London to chase after that chick from that movie, Reality Bites.

Why would a vampire's castle smell of garlic?

Redecorating can suck the life right out of you. When you're done hanging up all your crosses you're going to need a friend who knows the local nightlife. Why not take our handy guide along?

Too bad it's not actually Dracula's Castle, not even the literary one. The real castle of Vlad the Impaler was Poenari Castle. Not much of it left though.

Well, it is Romania, so proper plumbing is something it would have. The Romans were big on that, even though the castle is obviously after the collapse of the western Roman empire.

Protip: If you go, don't even think about using the bathrooms in Gara de Nord train station.

I've been. On a phone or I'd link pictures.

Most of the exhibits focus on Bran's past as the country retreat of the Romanian royals. (Fun fact: the crown and sceptre are kept there, not in Bucharest.) Dominic Habsburg has always been ambivalent about the Dracula thing, I hear, and vampires are dismissed in a single small room.

Of some interest to Western tourists with money to burn and an interest in Romanian history, but pretty much a rip-off tourist trap for anyone else. Admission is 25 lei, a small fortune out there (easily the most I paid to get into any museum in Romania).

Cool. I'd love to visit Romania. Heck, that whole region would be awesome to see and explore.

One problem I see is that all of the bedrooms are in the basement, and the beds are narrow and constricting..

I went there a few years ago, it started snowing. Very nice, and someone fell down the well.

Came to say this.  Also they've been trying to fob that castle off on some fool for several years now,

The worst thing about that castle in that those no-good Belmonts keep trying to break in.

What's worse, Vlad II was a prince and had numerous children a very long time ago.  If you're related to European royalty (and you'd be amazed how many of us are) this guy is one of your ancestors...

Why is that bad? It's great to have illustrious and colourful characters on the family tree. I'm descended from someone who was so opposed to the abolition of slavery over here that he single handedly delayed it for several years. Not a nice person, but an interesting story to learn and share. The Scots liked him, apparently.

Heh, as it says in To Kill a Mocking bird, "You can choose your friends but you sure can't choose your family, and they're still kin to you no matter whether you acknowledge them or not, and it makes you look right silly when you don't."

I got my details mixed up a little.  Yes, Vlad II is Vlad Dracul (Vlad the Devil) and he did have a lot of children but he's not Dracula, he's Vlad the Impaler's father (Dracula means "son of the Devil").  There were two brothers who were certified as Vlad the Impaler's sons.  Maybe Vlad kept their existence a secret to protect them or maybe they were fakes but either way that's the record we have of his descendants.   Prince Charles publicly stated in 2011 that he was a descendant of Vlad the Impaler.
