I've seen those WTFark videos in the sidebar for a while, but never actually watched one until now.
I wish I hadn't.

Why does it look so blurry at the beginning?

Yeah, they are trying really hard to make it a thing, but they need to work harder on making it good.
Everytime they try pushing it, the thread devolves into everyone saying how bad it sucks, except for the one or two people involved saying it's great, and then getting beaten down by the rest of Fark.

It's really sad.

Quiet you.  The forced advertisement with no volume control was awesome.

Sadly this was my first thought as well.  Luckily I was wrong.  I don't actually know the answer

So... we get to comment again on how bad these are?

That shouldn't last too long.

I'm willing to bet this security guard tastes like chicken.

Before this devolves too far into WTFark hate, I just want to say, as someone who's been here more than a decade, that I applaud your attempts at finding new ways to monetize your site without requiring all users to pay.  However, I think that you might want to consider a few other options when using video as a medium:

Ask the users whose material you use for permission AND ask if they would like to submit a user created video for the segment...or somehow participate in the production.  That may alleviate much of the kneejerk hate when people know they are a part of the process.

Well at least comments are being allowed on this one. Like a few others here I appreciate the effort on behalf of the site to expand and a talk soup style format works pretty well  for the material. However that being said, they are bad, really bad. So bad that it's easy to see that this will never take off. Maybe having a host who's funny and isn't annoying as fark might help.

Can't work with this, you're too vague here.   Having hung out w Rylander in real life he's not much different from how he is on the video (in fact he's dialed down a notch from how he is in person)

Yes, let us no allow this to de-evolve into a WTFark hate thread, and instead make this a rooster joke thread.

/At least maybe they'll have some better material for next time.

Pitting one lone writer against the horde of self-styled comedians is going flub, especially when the mass-crowdsourced model of generating headlines gives the audience the top 5% funniest. In short, we're spoiled because we only hear our own funny jokes.

Why not allow users to try and pitch jokes at the writing stage and give them some type of greenlight/gold star on their profile if it's funny enough to get into the script? We already sell our funny for front page greenlights.

That's a really good idea.  Part of the reason is the fast turnaround time, but I can check and see if that's possible.  I'd be interested to see if that worked :)

This probably won't be called constructive criticism but...they just don't make me laugh, when it seems like they're supposed to (although the "can you murder Mike Rylander" thing in "Satan Clase" was pretty good (nothing against him)). I think it would be better to do fewer quick jumps back to the host. Let the clips play longer to illustrate the idiocy, then have a longer commentary/riff section. Think Colbert.

I know make it funny isn't easy advice to follow or particularly useful. But I've tried to watch them and I almost never make it all the way through. The whole thing reminds me of an E news segment. The only solid advice I have to give is that sometimes the funny or snarky comments aren't the best thing about the thread. There have been a number of stories where the comments give a deeper understanding to a story, background information that puts it into context or first hand accounts of the story. I think the best example was during the Iranian Election protests. This site was getting information from a few posters that was not available elsewhere. I guess what I'm saying is that you guys don't have to try to be cute or funny. I'd watch something that digested the useful and relevant comments out of a large thread.

Also, on a technical note - I have trouble playing the clips - half the time the ad runs, then I just get the "Thanks for watching this episode of WTFark!" screen. doesn't make me want to come back.

One of the thing I've always wanted to do was something along those lines - deliver relevant material, maybe make it funny, but at least give folks a reason to care

When I was running the local student paper, I quickly learned the best way to alienate your volunteers is to fark with their material. Think about how enraged a subby gets when his headline is noodled with. Lifting comments (even if giving credit) would get their backs up, but making a WTFark TF thread calling for jokes on a story might sidestep the rage, because the expectation is set up beforehand. And besides, it's not like people don't scramble for a Boobies anyways, your turnaround on crowdsourcing the funny might be surprisingly quick..

Chickens (and roosters) have huge shiats and they're not very discriminating about where they drop them. Don't wear open toed shoes or sandals in that store.

Actually if you wanna see a really terrible one check out the Twerking episode.  That's what we got when Rylander wasn't there one day due to a schedule conflict.  I don't know many people who have been able to watch the whole episode

2014-05-12 03:17:48 PM
O and so much of the material here is basically in a debate format already. WTfark could cover the actual argument itself. Though the problem with that is there is a great potential of butthurt if people thinks their comments or opinions are being mocked by the site itself.

Have you thought about Google adwords or simple inexpensive paid listings on other sites? Maybe get a friendly (known) celebrity to shill for you other than Wheaton? I don't know where you are promoting these videos other than here, but when your existing audience continually tells you they are bad it's probably safe to assume your target audience is going to have a similar opinion.

If these videos are intended to bring new people to Fark, first they are going to have to suck a LOT less, and actually be funny and relevant to your intended audience. Right now these seem like a forced attempt at comedy, and IMHO there's nothing sadder to witness than that, it's that same uncomfortable feeling I get when watching a comedian or a sitcom that has run out of material but keeps trying anyway.

If you are looking for more specific advice on how to improve WTF, I'd suggest scrapping it or hire all professionals. If you are going to insist on doing it, no more half measures. Maybe you could spend time showcasing or lampooning what makes FARK popular or interesting in the first place, the people who post and participate here who create your content..

Maybe not the advice you were looking for, but its free and there it is.
