In MN it was fishing opener last weekend and there was extra DWI enforcement. They had the signs displaying the factoid that alcohol is responsible for 25% or road fatalities in MN which sounds terrible until you realize only 368 people died on MN roads in 2011. So alcohol was responsible for 92 deaths in 2011. which is terrible of course but is it worth jailing and criminalizing tens of thousands of people every year with the 0.08% BAC level?

more than AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combined

It would really suck to have AIDS and tuberculosis and then get beaten to death.

Because the only result of a drunk driving accident is death.

That would be 3,153,600 a year not 3.3 million. I am willing to bet that anyone who died and the family said, "yeah he drank some beer every so often.... why?" got counted.
These reports are just so full of shiat that the writer of them should be shot.

The number one cause of death worldwide is failure to continue living!!!

Blah Blah Blah, now give me my study grant and fark off.

I bet it gets people laid more often than that and therefore prolongs the species.  Net benefit!

Booze kills more people than any drug, but yet the government puts a war on mary jane, that generally hasn't killed anyone. Oh ya, they make high taxes on booze sales. That's the difference. It's about as obvious as the law against running a gambling establishment without a license. It's not that they have a moral objection to gambling, they just want their cut. Same thing with winning the lotto, or getting a end of year bonus at your place of employment. The government is going to take a much larger piece of that, than your usual wages. Why? Why would they take even a HIGHER percentage of a lotto win or a bonus? You would think they would be happy for your luck and wish you well with your windfall. Nope, they will spank you even harder by taking even more than usual. Congratulations, gimme moar.

And, I think prescription drug deaths in the US is actually closer to 40 (last year), but I'm prepared to be corrected on that one.

AND

"Including drunk driving, alcohol-induced violence and abuse,..."

Uh, isn't alcohol induced violence still violence?

Aids doesn't kill anyone, it's the stuff you get because you have Aids that kills you.
Tuberculosis is on the rise thanks to poor vaccination in third world countries like Haiti. You would be amazed at how big a slice of the population in FL have been exposed to it.
Pretty sure the Bubonic Plague hasn't killed anyone in the States ever.

I think there may have been a few deaths in the western states as well. It came over on trade ships from China in the 19th century. And today you will get a bubonic plauge scare from some type of rodent out west.

He made rope out of it; he didn't SMOKE it. You know what alcohol did for this country? Practically wrote the Constitution by itself, that's what.

One evening's intake for the 55 delegates:  "54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of claret, eight of whiskey, 22 of porter, eight of hard cider, 12 of beer and seven bowls of alcoholic punch."

H31N0US: More dreck from the hippy left trying to justify their little push to legalize the pot.

Pffft.  It's finally being realized that it should never have been made illegal to start with.

There is plenty of evidence out there now to show that pot compared to alcohol is completely safe.  They tried to ban alcohol.  That caused such outrageous violence that they changed their minds and legalized it again.

I'm not gonna get all preachy on everyone, but alcohol is easy to abuse, expensive, and dangerous as hell.  It's fine if you all want to have some drinks and party down.  But entirely too often it's WAY abused and deadly.  Not just to yourself, but to others around you.

At this stage of my life, I'm actually quite sick of seeing everyone glorify alcohol as if it were completely safe and cool.  Meanwhile, many of those same people vilify pot as if it were anywhere near as dangerous.  That is stupid, uninformed, short sighted, and quite backwards.

The whole situation is upside down.
