Things in the past need to stay in the past.  Otherwise you would not buy the Nissan Juke as in the past the common term for a whorehouse was a "Juke Joint" so the Nissan Juke is named after a whorehouse and that makes it a sin to buy it?  Give me a break.

Well, that was a wonderfully interesting, totally, made-up fact.

Ours played "The Entertainer", so I'm less racist than ll of you.

rynthetyn: That Guy What Stole the Bacon: dahmers love zombie: OK, so because some racist asswipe took "Turkey In The Straw" and wrote offensive lyrics for it, that's what all the ice cream trucks are playing?

I think I may possibly need a bit more evidence.  Like if the first ice cream trucks to play the song played it with the "N*gger Love a Watermelon" lyrics included, and if someone posts a video of that.  Then I'll buy the concept.  Otherwise, it's "Turkey in the Straw".  Which is weird-ass enough for an ice cream truck.

THIS.

In high school, they brought in a very angry lady to talk to (read: shout at) us about sexism in the media. I will never forget how she showed us a series of "Got Milk?" ads (you know, the milk moustache ones) and then, sly grin on her face, showed us a, shall we say, pornographically-influenced parody ad that left very little to the imagination. She spent the next ten minutes explaining to us that milk ads were really just money shot jokes and that we should all be ashamed of ourselves for not realizing this sooner and that milk is basically a misogynistic racket.

I wish I could say that even a small fraction of that was made up.

/yeah, yeah... csb...

You mean to tell me that the Got Milk ads  aren't money shot jokes snuck past an unwitting audience?

I hope not...

Dear Theodore R. Johnson, III
May I call you Theo?
"Yes, thank you.  I shall call you yoyo."
Would you like to make a good headline?
"Ok, how do I do that?"
Find something inane and commonly accepted.
"Oh, you mean maybe some piece of music that everyone knows?"
Sure, let's start with that.
"Uhmmmm  ok"
Now, call it racist!
"Oh . . . .  yeah . . . THAT'S RACIST!"
There you go son, now you made news!
Tahh daaaaa

Ice cream trucks, they sing this song:
Doo-dah!
Doo-dah!
Sellin' ice cream all day long
Oh, doo-dah day!
Goin' to freeze all night
Goin' to roam all day
They never ran a background check
You'd better stay away

You know, the song that directly mentions ice cream might have more of a chance to be the ice cream song than one about turkeys and straw...

Just sayin

noazark: "Turkey in the Straw" is also the underlying melody for "Do Your Boobs Hang Low?"

/just sayin'

And when I was a boy scout some sixty years ago, we sang that song at camp outs with the lyrics "Do your ears hang low." Now I suppose all kids must quit singing that or be sexist or racist, depending on which version most offends.

What age does that make you today?

I'm just a cub compared to you.

Any one of us could probably come up with offensive lyrics to damned near anything.
Mary blew a little lamb.

Mary had a little lamb,
Her father shot it dead,
Now it goes to school with her
Between two cuts of bread.

But, damn that song is so over the top racist it's actually kind of funny. Hard to believe that was only 98 years ago.

2014-05-12 05:57:26 AM
Late to the game but,

1. No ice cream truck I ever heard as a kid played that song.

2. Offensive lyrics are based on Turkey in the Straw, so it is not the tune that is offensive in any case

3. If you listen to the end you will hear some fine motorboating sounds.

2014-05-12 05:59:22 AM
Just so I understand what I'm recapping....

If someone at any point made up offensive lyrics to any tune, as soon as it is known offensive lyrics were made up, that song is now immediately sexist/racist/homophobic/etc in all future playings.

Yoy........

FTFA:
"The first and natural inclination, of course, is to assume that the ice cream truck song is simply paying homage to "Turkey in the Straw," but the melody reached the nation only after it was appropriated by traveling blackface minstrel shows. There is simply no divorcing the song from the dozens of decades it was almost exclusively used for coming up with new ways to ridicule, and profit from, black people."

1.) Citation needed.
2.) In the modern era if everyone has forgotten that there ever were racist lyrics, then how can the song still be racist? (Also, music can't be racist, lyrics can be.)
3.) Is the plan here to actively teach people that there is a racist way to sing the song and we should never forget?

Lot of a-holes on this thread, which yeah, yeah, welcome to Fark and all that.

He never said that the ice cream man is racist for having that tune (or ice cream companies for that matter) or to ban the use of that tune.  All he said was it was surprising or shocking to learn about the true origins of the tune - which is understandable.  It's an interesting bit of back history which I enjoyed reading.

OscarTamerz:  So by the same twisted NPR liberturd logic since Joseph Haydn composed the music used for the Nazi anthem Deutschland Über Alles 1797 anyone listening to Haydn today is a Nazi. What a bunch of farking PC tards.

Yeah, that was exactly the writer's point. If you buy an ice cream, you hate black people.  [rolls eyes]

Biner: I don't care if it's racist or not. All I know is by June, I will so sick of that song I'll be tempted to get on the roof of my apartment with a rifle and go all Texas Book Depository on the Ice Cream Man's ass.

Cool fact: "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was the cause for school shootings.

Our eyes have seen the glory
Of the burning of the school.
We have tortured all the teachers
And have broken all the rules.
We marched to the office
And we shot the principal.
Our troops go marchin' on....

"Mommy, can I have some ice cream?"

"NO. Ice cream is racist, because early American ice cream parlors played racist minstrel show tunes to lure in customers. Enlightened folk only eat foods with no connection to historical injustice."

"... Mommy, mayn't we even live in America, seeing as it was built by slaves? On lands emptied by genocide?"

"Indeed we may dear, provided we spend every waking moment feeling profound shame and spreading misery to all we meet.  It is the only way,"

Then yeah, they played Turkey in the Straw.

This world... is a weird world.

*wanders off to eat ice cream anyway*

The internet, itunes, and fark didn't exist when ice cream trucks started playing that catchy little instrumental song.  Possibly half of the drivers didn't know it had words.
