Lovely photos. Those kids look much happier playing with sticks and sand than kids playing Angry Birds. Healthier too.

Aside from the whole subjugation of women thing, the Hutterites are pretty cool, actually.  A lot cooler than more "mainstream" religions I've dealt with.  They're absolute pacifists (to the point of never wearing a uniform of any kind), incredibly talented farmers (and they don't hesitate to use the latest technology), and generally good Northern folk.

My feelings exactly.  Red letter christians who walk the walk.  Of course, they're died-in-the-wool communists, as well.

I grew up very close to a Hutterite colony (Beiseker, AB colony).  A field trip there is a grade 3 right of passage.  I still remember that the woman who was picking up manure with her hands was the same one that handed out fresh baked cookies at the end.  I don't know if she washed her hands or not, but damn that was a fine cookie.

There's one right near my sister (the Fairview colony west of Crossfield, AB).  It's where we get all our chickens from, and occasionally pickled vegetables.  The Morinville, AB colony has an outstanding market on hwy 44, which I make a point of stopping in at.  Their pies are awesome.

I was going to say the same thing.  The one in blue is as revealing a look as I've ever had at a Hutterite woman.

Unlike mainstream religions, Hutterite's are extreme pacifist. Extremely dangerous, many were locked up in prison during WWI. Realizing the Great War would soon have a Roman numeral after it, most moved to Canada.

I grew up near the Hutterites too, also in Alberta. Found nothing wrong with them as people at all. The ladies would come to Woolco to buy sewing stuff and were always really sweet.

Yet anytime I have seen hutterites from the colony (in town shopping etc). Or those that have left to live a more modern life (ask anyone who has worked on a drilling rig who the best workers are) they are all (men and women, respectful and happy.

Does that extend to their personal relationships too, or do they beat the ever-loving shiat out of their children like the Amish?

It was all fun and games and kids playing in the idyllic summer nature scene. Until the polar vortex came. When you get to -40°, it doesn't matter if it is -40° Celcius or -40° Fahrenheit. And this year the -40° was before the windchill factor.

Hutterites are good people.  Really good at farming and ranching.  I buy my eggs from the local colony and they also make amazingly good dill pickles, but they're pricey.  Many local store owners hated Thursdays (the day most of the local colonies came into town), because some of the kids liked to shoplift.  A lot.  The bar owners loved it because the men would hang out and drink beer.

One of those tasteful "lady" porns though, where into the village comes a nomadic young woodsman that the girls spy bathing in a nearby creek.

Which blossom will he find his way to puncture?  Perhaps the lot?

I don't know enough about the community to make conclusions, but they look happy, and because he was not supposed to be taking photos it removes the chance of acting.    I can see the ideal at play there.  But the one thing not clear is how do they have challenging enough work to stay satisfied?   I have farmed, but my real joy came from problem solving with software development.  How can you make the 2 work together?

Ahh, here we are:

Men rule over women, and women are seen as inferior, and in need of protection as the weaker vessel.

Yeah, big surprise there.

Oh, and:

The mortality rates of men to women (women living shorter lives than men, which is the opposite of most cultures).

Yeah, sounds like a great little misogynistic mess they've got going there.

I have a great apprecition for the Hutterite culture. I grew up between two colonies and have worked for them and on their land. But they are just people and are prone to all the faults that all people are. I've met Hutterites who are anger management meatheads, compulsive liars, corrupt leaders, and greedy capitalists. They're people... and there's good ones and bad. Each colony is run different but all are "closed" in nature. We've recently had a whole colony's kids taken away due to the use of cattle prods as discipline devices. Like most populations, the vast majority of them just want to get along, but Hutterite law is in-effect on colonies.

As an indigenous person, they do present an interesting comparision. The Hutterite culture binds of opportunity of their children, grassroots Hutterites do not pay income tax, and people accept that Hutterite law is in-effect on their land. Canadians are accepting of all this and almost see Hutterites as these happy-go lucky yokels that are beyond sin, corruption or self interest. On the other hand, were told we're holding our kids back if we insist on teaching them our langauges and any suggestion of First Nation law practiced on our land is met with yells of favoritism and a two-tier system.

I don't begrudge the Hutterites their cultural protections. I celebrate them. They make good neighbours and, like most groups, 85 per cent of them just want to get along and raise their kids their own way. I just wish Canadians realized that Canada has recognized that "equality has bumps" for other cultures before and they been very accepting of it
