NBC has a Thursday night comedy block? Is it 1994 already?

OP, no one watches TV when it's released anymore. It's called Hulu. You save it up and watch it all in a bloc on the weekend.

What happened to you, NBC? You used to be good, you used to have must see tv. You had shows like Seinfeld, Cosby Show, Cheers, Family Ties. Now you have shiat for brains network execs that cancel and move around shows arbitrarily. Just resurrect Tartikoff.

This.  I would have great difficulty telling you when most of the shows I watch actually air.  I watch them on Hulu, or subscribe to download them off iTunes.

Parks & Rec and Hannibal are pretty much it now. But those are IMO two of the best shows on TV, so at least there's that.

Watch Orphan Black, it holds up next to GoT and Breaking Bad in terms of quality.  I've never seen Hannibal (not into gore-fests).

Hannibal is gory for sure, but it's not bloody for the sake of it. And usually it's "arty" in its violence and blood. The story is great and the acting is superb. Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelson are next-level awesome.

You know, each network only has about 1.5 nights total of good prime time programming.  Instead of going head to head on a single night, you'd think they would each stake out a night where they could win in the ratings.  Instead, they're all acting like it's the late 70's when people absolutely had to watch shows when they aired.

I may check it out at some point.  Fuller is a great TV guy, and I loved Dead Like Me and Pushing Daisies, which both certainly flirted with the macabre.  I've just never had any desire to see any of the movies that  Hannibal is based on, or watch a show that shows a serial killer in graphic detail.  I watched a few episodes of Dexter, but eventually stopped for the same reasons.

II've said it on here before but that whole show is a success because of him. Only reason why I watch that piece of crap is because he is so damn amazing. The writing is terrible, and so is the acting of almost everyone else. The plot doesn't even make sense most of the time. It's a terrible show that I can't wait to watch every week.

Their last executive, Zucker, ruined the company. Under his reign,NBC went from number 1 to number 4 overall.  He then moved to CNN and decided to air nothing but missing plane coverage.  He is of the CEO race, so he is able to fail his way upward.

I like "Justified," but come on.  Pretty decent acting and dialogues, but having watched "True Detective," my expectation for what a great slow-paced cop show based in the South (yea, yea, I know, Kentucky and Louisana are still worlds apart, but I'm from California so...) has become spoiled, and "Justified" doesn't belong in that league.  Good filler show for when nothing else is on, but not "way ahead of everyone else."

As for NBC comedy block, the best lineup they ever had:

1) Community
2) 30 Rock
3) The Office
4) Parks & Rec

That is impressive.  No other networks could come close, in terms of quality, if not viewership.

Too funny because you ignore everything before "Community/30 Rock/The Office (which by the end was weak)? Parks and Rec. Here's Wiki's list of "Must See TV" from the past. You really gonna say that a Thursday night lineup of The Cosby Show/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court or just any lineup with Cosby/Cheers or Seinfeld/Fraiser with any other two good shows is inferior to your recent lineup?

Just kidding.  I came of age when ABC's TGIF was the greatest thing ever, so I guess don't have enough experience to make the statement I did.  But you're probably right, Cosby Show and Cheers on the same night is too much goodness, and the other two were bonuses.

This last season wasn't very good, but Justified is that damn good. True Detective is overrated, navel gazing, pretentious junkie rambling masquerading as quality drama. The Americans, Justified, Fargo, and Hannibal are all vastly superior. VASTLY. Billy Bob Thorton is eating McCoughney's lunch for breakfast and dinner, and he's not even trying that hard. True Detective might be the most overrated show of all time; everything it did pretty well was done better by any number of shows, frequently, and on a regular basis (except the single long shot, but that's more of a gimmick than actually conveying anything interesting about the characters, story, or the human condition). When Breaking Bad slaughters True Detective at the Emmys, maybe we're going to finally be past the point where HBO's mediocre shows win just b/c the voters are too stupid to see past the shiny HBO logo, like Pixar and the Animated Oscar.

Hannibal takes place in the same universe as Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls(one of my top 5), and Pushing Daisies. Marianne Marie Beetle was a character in Wonderfalls who crossed over to Pushing Daisies. Happy Time Temp agency from Dead Like Me was mentioned in Pushing Daisies. Gretchen Speck from Wonderfalls crossed over to Hannibal.

The problem is that Thursday nights is when Hollywood spends a barrelful of money to advertise movies that are coming out on Friday, so Thursday nights generate a lot more ad revenue for the networks.

Well, at least that's the way it should work before the advent of the DVR. It's strange watching shows with ads for movies that have already come and gone from the theaters.

For all the complaining about NBC, it was still the #1 network this season (even if you take out the Olympics) in the 18-49 demographic - at least that is what one of the TV guys I follow on Twitter said.

They have The Voice, Blacklist, NFL Football (in the fall) as well as pretty decent performers if underwhelming shows in Chicago File and PD as well as L&O:SVU.  CBS is out because their demographic is everyone over 50.  ABC is full of niche shows and FOX only now is starting to develop decent shows once the 'all Idol, all the time' method of programming started to fair.

As for the Blacklist, I really enjoy the show but I had to rewatch the first 6-8 episodes since Megan Boone's terrible wig distracted me the first time through.  It almost made the wig Amell wears during the island flashback on Arrow look natural.  Seriously, who ever is working in the hair and makeup department on that show should be shot for how bad that looked.

I like Seinfeld a lot but I would take their lineup from a few years ago of Community, Parks and Rec, The Office, and 30 Rock over their heyday lineup of Seinfeld (yay), Friends (meh), and a rotating list of mediocre filler sitcoms (boo).

They won't be competing in the same category so that's not gonna happen.  Though I agree with you that True Detective is overrated, just with less vitriol.  And FU for the Pixar slam.

browntimmy: Mugato: NBC has a Thursday night comedy block? Is it 1994 already?

I like Seinfeld a lot but I would take their lineup from a few years ago of Community, Parks and Rec, The Office, and 30 Rock over their heyday lineup of Seinfeld (yay), Friends (meh), and a rotating list of mediocre filler sitcoms (boo).

For awhile, that was Seinfeld, Friends, Fraiser, and the "rotating sitcom".... which is really what kills making that the "best" of the lot.

It's been almost 30 years now since the "original" (ugh, I guess I'm old), but, there is a reason why Cosby/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court set the standard.... those were rock steady sitcoms in their slots for a good 3-4 years.... then NBC swapped in Different World for Family Ties, and started trying to put other things in for Night Court..... why when by the third year, the 4 shows were in the Top 7 watched TV shows for the week... I guess they went by the "move some shows around to tentpole other nights" theory.

Also, consider what was there only a year before that was set:   Gimme a Break!, Mama's Family, We Got It Made, Cheers

I remember that lineup when I was a kid. I can't stand Bill Cosby and Family Ties was sappy but Cheers was good and Night Court was great.

I'll still watch Seinfeld if I come across it. Holds up better than most of the other sitcoms.
