I think this looks like it could be better then Gotham.  The only question is will NBC slot it in a place where it can find an audience?

I was impressed.

I like most anything with the angel/demon theme. The Prophesy movies were ok, with Walken anyways. I'd watch this.

And STILL no Cowboy Bebop movie?

They should run it Tuesdays at 10, after Supernatural on CW. Not only does NBC game a built-in audience w/the Hellblazer fans, there's a natural progression to the Supernatural fans

Hell, Castiel already dressed like John Constantine.

Looks like it will be following Grimm on Friday's at least to start.

So far I'm pleased. This looks to be a LOT more faithful to the comic than the movie was.

Now as long as Chas isn't a 20-something kid...

10pm time slot moves it from never to unlikely.  Does anyone smoke on network TV anymore.  I can't recall any off-hand.

Akira was the most expensive animation ever made at the time it was released. Now we have laptops with enough juice to mimic it in live action with a few "borrowed" programs like Final Cut.

Damn.

Maybe a cigar once in a great while but cigarettes? I think they showed Chandler with one in his hand on Friends once because it was about him quitting. Before that, I dunno, I Love Lucy?

I forgot The X-Files of course. But that was canceled a long time ago.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I can only assume that a 20 episode, 42 min long series will suck having WAY TOO much crappy filler.
Strangely enough, network hasnt learned any of the lessons of HBO, Netflix, SHO, AMC, or pretty much anyone else.

They will ahve to cancel it after 1 year.
Not enough viewers to cover insane costs.
lol

The most recent I can think of would be an episode of How I Met Your Mother where they all smoked. Of course it was an episode about how they all eventually quit.

I actually liked the Constantine movie, mainly because I was not familiar with the source material at all. Once you separate it from the comics, it's actually pretty good.

2014-05-11 07:54:20 PM
The Keeanu Constantine is a guilty pleasure of mine. Rachel Weiss is in a soaking wet sheer white dress shirt for a good portion of it, Shiah Le Poof dies horribly, and the Satan guy is a riot

I also really enjoyed it. never read the comic, so I didn't have any preconceived ideas of how the movie should have been. I still wish they'd make a second one.

Not a bad looking cast, now all they need is the Volkswagen dude to come back as Satan and it's game, set, match.  Here's to hoping this show doesn't end up on a Sunday timeslot.

I seriously think AMC should have picked this up instead of having a Walking Dead spinoff. It would have been a perfect pairing.

California laws regarding workplace safety makes it INCREDIBLY difficult to have any sort of smoking occur on a movie set.  One of the specials done for Mad Men discusses this.  On the show they actually use herbal cigarettes, and even then there were apparently hurdles to get over.

It's not impossible obviously, but apparently it's difficult enough that it factors into the decision in a non-trivial way.

That was my take on it, too.  If you have no idea how badly its treating the source material it's a pretty enjoyable film.

A lot of modern remakes are like that.  Land of the Lost, the Final Fantasy movie, and The Green Hornet all spring to mind as movies that were undone by the expectations imparted by their branding.  The Green Hornet and Land of the Lost in particular were movies that were more parodies of the original films than reboots.  If Land of the Lost had been called, I dunno, "The Lost Land of Lostness" or something it might not have been so negatively perceived.

On the other hand, 21 Jump Street managed to do pretty well without changing its branding, but then again they go to great, almost painful lengths to establish that the film is an in-universe parody rather than a reboot.

All right, I'm sold.

It was looking like a cheap rip-off of Supernatural initially, but that trailer was clearly going for something much closer to spiritual successor to "The Dresden Files" TV show.  Crippling lack of Paul Blackthorne aside, this is more than enough to make me stop caring whether they actually get the adaptation of the comic anywhere near the mark or not.

// Primarily because The Dresden Files had barely a speaking relationship with its own source material (despite being managed by the books' actual author) and yet was still farkin' awesome.  I'm totally in if that's the school of adaptation involved here.

// And because it's far less insulting to everyone's intelligence to rip off a show that's been canceled for a while than one that's still running.  See also: Fringe basically carbon-copying X-files, which was actually did the long-arc conspiracy plots better than the original.

Here's what I don't get... Time Warner owns DC. Time Warner owns HBO. Logically, a Hellblazer show would be put on HBO the way Disney has Shield on ABC.

But it doesn't seem WB has ever figured out how to use their various companies in that way.

Eh, only if you're using pretty loose categories.  X-Files/Fringe are procedural cop shows with supernatural elements thrown in.  Supernatural is a noir/western show with supernatural elements thrown in.

Those are pretty different storytelling styles from the beginning.  Procedurals are, essentially, episodic puzzles, and western/noir genres tend to be overridingly character dramas.  You may notice that Supernatural stopped really relying on tricking/surprising the viewer as a source of dramatic tension within a few episodes, often outright telling the audience what's going on minutes into an episode, where Fringe or X-Files episodes where things are laid out for the viewer before the 42nd minute or so are pretty few and far between.

// Not saying either is bad, necessarily, but putting 'em in the same category just because they both featured the monster-of-the-week element is probably overlooking some pretty significant differences in writing.

I'd say the way they did the devil is actually superior to the comics version.  Tilda Swinton was good too.  The rest, not so much.

You just have to actually watch the trailer to see what you're getting.

On occasion it will give something akin to the books. But other than that, typical network BS.

2014-05-11 10:13:26 PM
This looks really horrible. The main guy is what is ruining it, his acting is painful and I'm getting that from just short little clips. Overacting to the extreme.

2014-05-11 10:17:45 PM
This series looks good and I hope it does well. At least Constantine is British, blonde and seems to be closer in attitude to the comic version.

Still, I would have liked to have seen the show called Hellblazer and have it set in the U.K. A lot of the British centered storylines in the comics were great. The Maggie Thatcher era /demons thing was a good story.

Dammit, I can't tell if you are joking or if you actually don't know that the comic this show is based on (Hellblazer) came out way before Supernatural and the Dresden Files.(The first issue was in '93.) In fact, SPN's original showrunner, Kripke, based Cas' look on Constantine because he is a HUGE fan of the comic.

Which is insane, because I'll never forget the Daffy/Bugs intro to the Batman vhs.  They've been owned/linked for DECADES and Disney is already lightyears ahead of then.

So I've never read Hellblazer, but I'm pretty sure its going to be lighter than a show like that should be because it's on NBC. And if I wanted to watch a watered down Angels v Demons show that has glimpses of awesome but just isn't quite dark enough, I'll keep watching Supernatural since I'm already invested like 8 seasons.
