People who get robbed while on vacation are clearly doing some things wrong. One, always have someone to watch over your place. Two, have some kind of security system. Three, dont be so damn predictable in your annual vacations. Someone's going to notice that you leave during the same months out of every year. And four, though this may not apply to this elderly couple, do not go posting travel plans all over Facebook and crap like that. Also either have mail held or have someone pick it up daily. An overstuffed mailbox is a clear sign that the occupants are away and I've known people who've been robbed based on that alone. They came back to a stuffed mailbox and several newspapers on their porch. And an empty house. Sucks for this couple and all, but I can't help but think it could have been avoided. And based on the fact that it appears this robbery was done thouroughly and with some degree of finesse, then they must have taken their time and therefore knew the couple was gone and not coming back any time soon. Even though the couple apparently made a target of themselves, thievery is still despicable and i hope they find the bastards and lock em up.

Given that TFA suggests they (the thieves) were in there for a while and knew where to look for some things, I'd be seeing if there were any grandchildren with problems that could be solved by stealing things...

We had a US mail carrier that was part of robbery ring. It was easy to figure out. Everyone that stopped their mail was being robbed while away.

Best approach: don't let "stuff own you". If you really can't live without out, you better get a big a** safety deposit box and use it.

The same thing (but worse) could have happened in a house fire.

Had something similar happen to a friend.  Left for vacation for a week, returned to find everything gone.  Theives had just rolled up in a U haul and just piled it in, people just thought someone was moving.
