Because if they read, they'll start to think they're people. I don't want my lovely lady to understand the receipt and realize that I only paid 3 chickens a bucket of silver coins for her hand.

Well, ya gotta admit, it is part and parcel of the end of teenage fantasys of endless virgins for personal amusement.

So, yes, be afraid, BE VERY AFRAID!

They don't want anyone to read. A large portion of their support comes from the illiterate being preached to by the corrupt.

Remove the illiterate and the corrupt lose power.

Next time how about we give them PDWs first then send them to a remote school terrorists are threatening?  Screw sending them books, give them girls guns.

Paywall, so I did not RTFA, but the reason is that women are possessions, and should not be learning. Right?

2014-05-11 12:27:35 PM
Subby doesn't see the irony of posting a link about reading to a paywall that stops people reading.

To be fair, those boko haram asswipes aren't down with boys reading either.

I don't care if girls read books, but for God's sake don't let them write any.  It's all feelings, and relationships, and stupid shiat like that.  If there is a gun in the book, it's just a gun, maybe described as a pistol or rifle if they've done some research.  If a man has guns in his book, it's a Glock .45 AUTO Gen4.

/no, I'm not serious.

netweavr: Remove the illiterate and the corrupt lose power.

Unfortunately that's not entirely true.  Most Communist nations made large literacy pushes, sometimes exceeding their first-world adversaries, yet corruption and a tendency toward oligarchy remained.  If anything, the systems recognized as legitimate authority in those countries required corruption in order to achieve personal gain beyond that which the systems would normally allow.

Certainly a degree of local corruption can be avoided with literacy, but only because it doesn't allow for the simple-minded themselves to attain that power over their peers in the first place at a very local level.

Yet another article only addressing half of the problem with the Boko Haram.  The schoolboys were murdered (burned alive as one method) and the girls were kidnapped from the school because it was perceived as providing a WESTERN education (not the fact that girls were being educated - the school was coed).  Granted, that doesn't change the level of atrociousness of their acts.

Dragonflew: Paywall, so I did not RTFA, but the reason is that women are possessions, and should not be learning. Right?

Not at all.

It was more about how female education tends to lead to greater economic development and social stability in a country, as well as lowering birthrates and family sizes, thereby changing social demographics to reduce the high proportion of unemployed, disaffected young people under 25.

Christopher Hitchens, as usual, was right: the key to understanding, and defeating, muslim extremism, is in their sexual repression.

Actually, Islam as a tradition of educating women.

Fundamentalist Christians are also good with women reading, as long as it is the Bible, and as as long as they accept a man's interpretation. Which just goes to show that fundamentalism is poisonous to all the Abrahamic religions.

So who is the bigger blight on humanity, boko haram or the taliban?  The fact that the taliban wanted to ban musical instruments and they blew up those ancient Buddhist statues, in addition to their anti- woman, anti- education policies, has me give them a slight edge in the scum-of-the-earth contest.

I was really enthused with this article, right up until I read this:

"A $40 gift at Camfed.org buys a uniform so a girl can go to school."

The one thing that I'd consider non-essential to an education is a uniform. I immediately thought of all the missionaries to Haiti that brought Bibles to starving people. How about a $40 gift for BOOKS! Get your priorities in order, then I'll consider your particular charity.

Coming on a Bicycle: Christopher Hitchens, as usual, was right: the key to understanding, and defeating, muslim extremism, is in their sexual repression.

Lot of people confusing "muslim" with "conservative" in here.

During the ceremony, the fathers present their daughters with a purity ring - a symbol of their commitment to virginity, with the idea of the girls giving their virginity to their fathers to protect until marriage. As one father explains to his daughter "You keep this ring on your finger and at this point, you are married to the Lord and your father is your boyfriend".
