They're suing because they don't think their dad covered up child molestation. farking attention whores.

The whole situation is obviously disgusting, but they COULD be right from what I know of the evidence. Since we haven't SEEN it, which seems to be something they're after, I can't really be confident in forming an opinion.

Hey, Paterno's legacy is solid. He firmly established that ones character is what matters, and when it comes to choosing between right and wrong, you should let little children be raped rather that taking the minimal actions possible that you could because it might make a football program look bad.  That's the Paterno legacy, and that sums up what Penn State Football is still about.

Well, we do know that Sandusky still had an office and access to the athletic facilities well after the shower rape occurred.

...There's a good excerpt from an upcoming bio of JoePa that just showed up online a few days ago, covering the days immediately before his firing. For a long time I was willing to give Paterno some benefit of the doubt, but not any more.  The excerpt makes it clear that had Paterno lived, he would have been facing - at best - perjury charges, and at worst conspiracy to obstruct justice. among other things.  There looks to be a lot of evidence that hasn't come out yet, and if the Paterno family presses on, they are likely to be very, very unhappy when this is all over.

Hey, he told his bosses. The President and Board of Trustees of PSU were the ultimate power of PSU. Except of course when they tried to fire Paterno and he wouldn't let them. Or when he wouldn't let them have oversight over the football team. But otherwise, they were all-powerful.

I thought Paterno was all powerful?

Paterno had the juice to stop it, witnessed it, failed to act in a MEANINGFUL manner.

It's sad that one act of omission besmirches his entire rep, but this was not fudging some players grades but kiddy rape.  He should have acted unilaterally, if he really believed it was wrong.  He did not and did not, apparently.

Does the pa stand for pussy-ass?

Paterno heard that PSU needed wide receivers, and turned his back as Sandusky retrained a couple of tight ends.

1. That's not really his call.  I know we say, "Oh he's so powerful blah blah," but the guy wasn't his employee anymore at that point, and we don't really know how powerful he was outside of his ability to direct his football program.  People suggest that he had carte blanche to basically control university operations and like... that's stupid and doesn't make sense.

Did he basically have unfettered power in regards to the football program and all aspects of the way the university handled its players?  Absolutely.  Could he necessarily kick someone out of a building or ban them from going into a facility?  I doubt it.

2. People who aren't familiar with daily life at PSU don't realize how bumbling and confused he's been for years.  Dude's basically had dementia since the early 2000s.  A few years ago he suffered some serious injuries while trying to demonstrate proper punting, or returning or something.  I think he broke his hip.  He was like 84 and out trying to kick or something.  It was a huge embarrassment for everyone involved but he had so much (bizarre) popular support that forcing him out was just unpalatable.  His mind has been mush for years, its VERY possible that because a lot of what we think we "know" depends on inferring that "Nobody could be that blind, or forgetful, or confused," he really wasn't purposefully launching a coverup, he was just REALLY old.

Also he played WR in highschool and college, 8 years getting knocked around probably diminishes how useful you are in your late 70s and your 80s.

ladodger34: I'm calling bullcrap on that one.  If he wanted Sandusky gone, it would have happened and you know it.

How would I know that?  How do YOU?

Being "powerful" enough to keep from being dismissed doesn't make him a power on campus.  He remained because none of the fan base (for god knows what reason, he was a garbage coach) would support his removal.  They were so vociferous about it that they took to the streets.  That doesn't give him authority that the chain of command doesn't afford him.

If I were super popular with our customers, I probably wouldn't be able to fire people in other parts of the company (which is where Sandusky was after he retired from football).  I could probably shiatcan and be nasty to anyone in my department that I felt like, but I doubt I could just dismiss someone from HR.

Also like I said, he was really a pathetic spectacle in those last couple of years, and reaching back into the late 90s he didn't make a ton of sense anymore during pre-game and post-game interviews.  He basically had a script he'd run through every week that was the same 2 or 3 dogmatically adhered to statements.  It didn't matter WHAT was happening, that's what he was going to say.  When he says he was confused about what McQueery related to him I think there's good chance (maybe even 50/50) he either actually was confused about what he was told at the time, or lost his understanding of what he was told later.

Look, all we know (again) is that Sandusky still had access to the program well after Paterno was advised of the shower incident.

Them is the facts.  The feeble, dementia ridden coach is what the supporters are "conjuring" up.

BUT.. if the "dementia" angle is true, who allowed the child farker to still have an office despite knowing he was farking kids in the shower?

ladodger34: BUT.. if the "dementia" angle is true, who allowed the child farker to still have an office despite knowing he was farking kids in the shower?

I forget who he had his office under, but I believe it was under the auspices of The Second Mile (his child grooming charity).  I think he was working as a liaison to them or something.

There were a lot of whispers when everything broke open (from the same local guy who said there were about to be indictments like 5 months before the news came out) that a lot of moneyed interests were using the 2nd Mile as a parking ground for assets and then using them to exchange goods and services without paying taxes on them.

I've always thought THAT was an obvious primary driver that a lot of people overlook, especially given that we had Ray Gricar (a local DA) disappear a bit after the first Sandusky investigation.  A university can't usually disappear people but it seems like if those stories are accurate, the sort of person doing that kind of illicit high-value favor trading would know how to get it done.

It also feels telling that the Gricar investigation was first targeted at the mafia, and that this kind of thing would probably work best if you had some dirt on the founder and chairperson.

Anyway I haven't conjured up the fact that an 84 year old man seemed feeble and confused lol.  His family thinks he didn't do this with some kind of malice, but they probably also don't want to suggest he was losing his faculties.  Let them try to prove it.  We don't need to hate on them for wanting the family member they loved to not be remembered as a monster, even if you don't think there's much chance of it.
