I don't think I ever realized the Hindenburg was flying a bunch of swastikas when it went down. Makes it sort of awesome knowing that now.

I didn't even realize it was German-flagged. Though now that I think about it, the name "Hindenburg" is pretty clearly German.

Toward the end of TFA, one of the photo captions it says the airship was filled with hydrogen because the US wouldn't sell helium to the Germans. Awkward.

I just figured this was a follow-up on the Virginia deal, but no. Surprised no-one linked video to it in this thread.

What happened to the film in the seconds between them throwing down the lines and the explosion. It's a conspiracy! 9/11, the illuminate, the masons, $cientologists, aliens, area 51, the NSA, IBM, CBS, RCA, the CIA, the FBI, the NBA, A&P, NBC, ABC, R. Crumb, and CPO Sharky. Ya see? They're all the same. And what do I think? I think if life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Good night, and may God bless!

Im surprised there where as many survivors of the Hindenburg as there was considering that before penecillan and skin grafts about all that doctors could do for a burn victim was give you enough Morphine to make you comfortable and call for a priest.

I'm surprised they've never remade a large helium-filled zep for commercial travel. Sure, it would probably be something only the rich could afford but the objection that it takes longer to travel this way isn't very sound considering lots of people take luxury cruises and cross-country Amtrak.

I didn't know they had to dump so much ballast and circle for as long as they did before attempting the landing. I wonder if an engineer did something stupid after running out of ballast, like try to vent one of the bags to lose buoyancy...

So 5 Americans, 2 Mexicans, and a Swede all literally died in a fire and its "cool" because there was a Swastica on the ship? Your moral compass sounds about as fracked as the one of a Nazi.

Lots of people died fighting the Nazis.  Lives well spent.

What? There's a couple of huge ones right there on the fins, plain as day!

One trivia note: as it approached the field in NJ, it flew over the Jewish neighborhoods of New York City. You could almost envision the German crew doing trollfaces and going "Schwierigkeit?" at the crowd of Jews going "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-" below.

I wonder if a blimp, zeppelin... whatever... could be constructed with an internal bladder of modern materials  filled with hydrogen surrounded by an external thin layer of inert gas. Coupled with modern monitoring devices, it seems like it could be made quite safe and efficient without using an increasingly important gas. Nobody smokes anymore anyway. It could be a pleasant way to travel. Cover it with solar panels for all I care.

Just thinking out loud.

Smithsonian Channel had a decent docu-show about the Hindenberg disaster. If you get the channel I highly rec DVRing it or watching it onDemand. I think it was called Hindenberg the Untold Story or something like that. The footage is chilling and the playback of the radio announcer's play-by-play is a feels trip from hell.

I mean, we joke about the "oh the humanity" line, but when heard in full context it's just heartbreaking. And the interviews with survivors still alive were enlightening. You think of the disaster, but rarely do we think about the mundane moments leading up to it and the suvivors' perspectives take us to those moments to really illustrate the sheer OMGWTFHOLYSHIAT! change from normal to "errybody's effed".

What format did they use back then?  Nazimax?

When the dude suggests "that her dead will not have died in vain" it reminds of the "they died doing what they loved"... both are equally meaningless and annoying.

By the way, if you're going to use quotes to quote me, don't do "cool." I said "awesome." That's totally different, sheesh.

A blimp exploding in a large fireball is in fact the exact opposite of cool.
