timelady: I honestly cannot comprehend what sort of person thinks taunting a bereaved parent like this achieves anything. Let us say, in a Bizarro universe, they were right, these parents still have a lost and missing child they believe dead.

That's not the conspiracy theory.  The Sandy Hook Truthers believe that the parents are hired "crisis actors" and that the kids never existed---or that the kids were never hurt, and the parents are just pretending to have lost them.

Either way, though, it's disturbing to think how radicalized some gun nuts have become.  You have 20 elementary school kids slaughtered in a horrible tragedy, and because they were slaughtered with firearms these people will actually take sides against the kids, and torment their parents.

I was with two of them in a psychiatric hospital.  They were quiet about it "until."  They were also convinced of the Illuminati.  One became certain that I was a Mason, hushed up, and kept decent conversation from then out.  There was plenty else to talk about.

Marcintosh: living in CT so if you're doubting it then lemme let you in on it.  My firend buried her niece.

Not that people who deny well documented events aren't full of shiat, and I'm sorry for your friend's loss, but let's break it down like a crazy person:

You assert, semi-anonymously, that you live in "CT". There's no way for anyone to verify this. Untrustworthy.

Next, you say that your "firend" buried her niece. It's not you, not even your family, but your friend. That's several steps of removal from the primary, and untrustworthy source, increasing the reasonable doubt. Not mention the lack of why she was buried. Might be unrelated to the incident in question. Untrustworthy.

Then you make a patently false statement like "They don't bury the living this century." despite several verifiable instances in the news where this is in fact the case it happened or almost happened. Untrustworthy.

Verdict: False.

Not that conspiracy theorists are rational people, but they have a philosopher's standard for evidence when it suits them. Meanwhile, they'll accept the word of a friend of a friend of a guy who ate at a McDonald's within 2000 nautical miles of Area 52 once if it feeds their paranoia.

Maybe not.  The one and only Holocaust denier I met stunned me so much, I just escaped as quickly as possible, lest their obvious brain disease was contagious.  I am not kidding.  His mouth was moving, and his arms were waving, and I'm sure I looked life the fish out of water, eyes bugged out and gasping.  To this day, I still think he needed medical assistance, like a Thorazine drip.

On one hand, taunting the family of a dead child is unforgivable. On the other hand, we wouldn't be in this situation if we didn't have this sadistic need to immortalize tragedy through memorial. Bad things happen. Yes, it's terrible, but how does making everyone who tries to use a public facility for the next 50 years also feel bad do anything to help the situation? It's not like we need to raise "awareness" for unpredictable acts of violence.

I don't really see it as an unpredictable act of violence.  Total loon + access to guns = horrible farking idea.

I'm certain the that it's not the intent of the memorials to make people feel bad.  I see it more as the families/people involved trying to make something positive happen in their lost loved one's name.

Yeah, there was a set of parents of an Aurora victim that look VAGUELY similar to the parents of a Sandy Hook victim.  Since both shootings brought up debate about the mentally ill's access to firearms, the crazies seized on this as a conspiracy to take away their guns.

It can never be said enough, so I'll say it again.

Conspiracy theories, in the long run, are all about showing how smart the theorist is. Nothing else. Not bringing down the conspiracy, not avenging its victims, not even waking the sheeple. The whole point is to demonstrate that he (and not you) figured it out (because you are too dumb).

On the other hand, I think there's an excellent chance that this is not really the work of a Truther, but just a garden-variety malevolent sociopath out for his lulz. So... that would be slightly less infuriating, I guess?

My favourite conspiracy I've ever stumbled onto was a facebook group of 300 + people who believed that not only as Sandy Hook a hoax, but that the school itself never existed.

They had tons of 'evidence' that up until a week prior to the shooting, it was just an empty, government owned warehouse.

They also had records showing that the parents of at least eight of the children at the school were, at some point in their life, actors.

Their belief was that the government dressed a warehouse up like a school, hired a bunch of actors to pretend to be kids and parents, claimed a shooting, and those 'victims' just moved and changed their names.

A quote I'll never forget

"Not a single shot was fired at Sandy Hook. Just a sub-par community theater production passing itself off as a tragedy."

Wingless, a West Texas school district was selling one of their old buildings, it was built in 1946, 31,000 sqf, in the shape of a large "H". It was officially closed as a school in 2004. It had been sitting idle for ten years and the district had been using it for storage.

I had the opportunity to tour the building before the auction, there was unbelievable amounts of  crap it in, stacked to the ceiling in some cases. Lockers, boxes, old tvs, you name it.

The official "Sandy Hook" report showed the interior of the school, and judging from the appearence, the building looked exactly like that closed down West Texas school. The way that things were piled in front of windows, the general clutter throughout the building.

In the mid to late 20th century when the coal industry declined in the Appalachian Mountains, US 23 was often dubbed the Hillbilly Highway,[9] and it was said the three "R's" of the region were "reading, writing and Route 23",[10] as workers migrated to northern industrial cities such as Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, or Chicago. Prove me wrong. If you ever been inside fully operational schools, the interior is usually neat and orderly, and that's for safety reasons among other things, Stuff like the boxes piled in front of the windows at SH not just one but all the windows, the complete disarray of the interior,  the desk thrown in piles against the wall, which by the way, would not have happened because they would have to preserve the crime scene as original as possible.
