^That.

If I think any physical discipline is needed for my kid, I'll handle it.

If you slap my kid, I will take it the same way as if you had slapped myself or my wife.

If you can't control kids without touching them, you're not much of a teacher.

I read somewhere that schools that allow corporal punishment have fewer students on some ADD drug.  I honestly don't remember where I read it, just came upon it while surfing.

I'm not against corporal punishment in schools if the parent has given permission.

My own son can be a handful at times.  We had just moved to a different school district and the principal was suggesting drugging him (he's slightly autistic, in special ed, and he's 12).  I told her I do not believe in drugging kids and I suggested to the teacher to do what previous teachers have done--just give me a daily report, whether he did well or acted up, and I'll take care of it.

The teacher agreed, and a week later she was like "It works!"

Yeah...because my son DOES know that there are consequences to his actions.  If he gets one "strike" at school, no TV until he has a good day the following day, for example.

And there's no prescription, and no nasty side effects!

No they don't and they never did.

I mean, that reasoning is almost impressively stupid.

Men should not be teaching the 5th grade.

Care to enlighten us as to your reasoning for saying men should not teach 5th grade?

It's basic history and pre-Algebra. Why would you let a guy teach that?

Because maybe he has a talent for teaching kids the fundamenyal skills they will use for the rest of their lives?

I still fail to get your point. Are you attempting to say men arent capable of teaching young kids, or are you saying a man shouldn't teach such "easy" classes because it's beneath him?

No. What I am saying is that our current educational system is designed to move the children from their matriarch into a designed system to be taught. My boys knew/know more about algebra/calculus/history/literature than the teachers in their schools. We use female teachers in the early grades to "comfort" the children because they are removed from the family enviro. If you added a Male teacher in grades 1-4 then there would be an useless "Dad" effect.`

There is no way you are serious.

Actually, as a teacher, I would love to see a LOT more men teaching at the elementary level.  Part of what is wrong with many of the children in my area is that they have absolutely NO positive male role model in their lives.  If they had male teachers (not just coaches, because that means the only class they think counts is PE) in grades K-5, I believe that fewer of them would think that the only way for a "man" to live is to act like a gangland thug.  The few male teachers that we do have in the middle school and junior high here are very effective..  It changes the childrens'  attitudes to realize that a man can be smart and educated and care about something other than guns and hos, and still be a pretty cool fellow.  I would also like to see more teachers from smaller minority groups:  black men, Hispanic men and women, and non-Christians. It think it would cure most of what is wrong with the South if we had some diversity in education for a generation or two.
