Capaldi will most likely be a great Doctor, but I highly doubt he'll even come close to Baker.

He's as useless as a marzipan dildo.

/ someone had better slip "omnishambles" in there somewhere.

What exactly was the BBC supposed to say?  "We've seen some videos of Capaldi in action, and he's farking awful.  What a shiatty decision that was.  Is it too late to ask Matt Smith to come back?"

I think Peter will be fantastic, but I don't think the BBC counts as an objective source.  They're not going to say he sucks, even if he does.

Of course it's The Doctor. I'm sorry but K-9 was the best companion. It was there for both The Doctor and Sarah Jane.

The hype is becoming worrisome. A really great Doctor would be preceeded by quiet or noncommittal quotes so that people would have absolutely no idea what is about to hit them.

Capaldi will be fine.  What really needs to improve is the writing.  The last few episodes of Smith's final season were god-awful.  Day of the Doctor somewhat redeemed things, but Coleman's character is still really uninteresting.

I have always hated that they announce the next Doctor before the regeneration. Especially since that's news that gets plastered absolutely everywhere and can't be avoided. The new Doctor should always be a surprise.

It would be great, but utterly impossible to do, especially in the UK where filming, frequently in public, starts at least six months before airing. It was hard work keeping Capaldi secret for the few days before his revealing.

For a lot of people, whichever Doctor they were first exposed to is "their" Doctor.

For me, that's Baker. PBS ran Doctor Who every weekday right about the time kids got home from school.

I liked Colin Baker, never understood all the hate.

2014-05-10 02:41:47 PM
The source is also reported to have said that Capaldi is "his own man" and that his portrayal of the infamous Doctor is "very distinctive", adding: "He is the oldest Doctor, and there is a sense he is more distanced from his assistant, more of a mystery.

"He is perhaps less a mate, and someone she looks up to. She has to try and gauge him - but dramatically it's very satisfying and onscreen they work very well together.

"There is a real buzz about this Doctor. And of course the monsters are so shiatty you'll long for a return to the more realistic aliens of Star Trek: TOS, but hey, it's still a really fun show so don't let eyefuls of horrid British cheese stop you from enjoying it."

Peter Capaldi COULD be a legendary Doctor.  He certainly has the acting skill.  But, Moffat is the showrunner, still, so I fully expect Capaldi to be asked to wave the sonic around like it's a farking lightsaber every fifteen seconds, and work in one ridiculous dick joke or stupid pun every ten minutes.

...and a better budget, and a better producer, and better scripts for the first half of his run, and some support from the BBC instead of a network controller who wanted to kill the show...

Same problems plagued Colin Baker's run.

/and subby DID misspell "Patrick Troughton".

Everyone has their favorite Doctors for their own reasons...most of the time, it has nothing to do with how good they actually were or how good the episodes were.  It seems that most people's favorite Doctors are the ones that really got them into the show.  Mine's Matt Smith, but I'm so, so excited for Capaldi.

Even back in the old series it was known in advance that a new actor would be taking on the part before it happened via the news in the UK.  But in pre-internet days, the switch was usually a surprise to viewers in the states.

There is not enough "this" in the world to "this" this this.

BBC should be careful about over-hyping. But then, the "Doctor Who" marketing has never been anything remotely resembling subtle since Moffat took over.

Esroc: I have always hated that they announce the next Doctor before the regeneration. Especially since that's news that gets plastered absolutely everywhere and can't be avoided. The new Doctor should always be a surprise.

Firstly, it's never once been a secret who the new Doctor will be.

Secondly, that's a pretty terrible idea, promotion-wise.

Thirdly, since the new Doctor only gets about 15 seconds of screen time before the show disappears for several months, having it be a surprise carries little story-telling worth.

Now, if the regeneration itself were a surprise - as Eccelston-Tennant was supposed to be - that would work. Although I doubt it would work more than once.

And even if the BBC tried to keep it a secret, that secret would have to last for months, and it would be a nightmare trying to keep it under wraps. There's be practically no point.

I've never understood the whole "best doctor" thing. I started with Baker, and he's fantastic of course, but I don't have a favorite Doctor. I'm a huge, lifetime fan of the show, and I really love them all for their own reasons. There are things about some of them I don't like - Tennant became insufferably emo and toward the end of his run and his overacting became a problem (I ACT WITH MY TEETH!).

But I could probaby write a whole page on why I love each Doctor - with one exception. McCoy made me abandon the show. I could probably write 10 pages on everything I can't stand about McCoy.

MadSkillz: The show is terrible and makes no sense yet I cannot not watch it!

I'm not sure where you get "terrible," but the "makes no sense" isn't always the case. The problem is just that Moffat would much rather have what he considers a great gimmick (the helicopter carrying the TARDIS with the Doctor dangling from it in the 50th special) than have those moments (or his stories in general) stand up to even the smallest modicum of intellectual scrutiny.

I feel sorry for the intelligent people working on that show who read a script and say, "Yeah, but boss, this makes no sense." I can only imagine how frustrating that must be every time it becomes apparent that Moffat doesn't give a fark.

100 Walt Walrus: BBC should be careful about over-hyping. But then, the "Doctor Who" marketing has never been anything remotely resembling subtle since Moffat took over.

Russel T. Davies marketing of Doctor Who was about as subtle as a rampaging jackhammer.  And was one of the reasons why Christopher Eccleston left after one year.

Honestly just stop with the "emo Tenth Doctor" crap, just because the character took a darker turn toward the end. Hell they did the same thing with Tom during his last season and I don't hear anyone whining about it. I might, but then I'm not nearly the hugh forth Doctor fan that most people are.

Other than the obvious (e.g., Blink), The Day of the Doctor might have actually been my favorite episode of the entire series, and the Christmas special might have been my absolute least favorite.
