Interesting article. I personally worry about the day this becomes the norm due to security breaches. Also, I was in a CVS tonight and they only had self checkout. There was a sign saying ring bell if you would prefer human checkout. Strange.

If they kill the retail employment market in the US, there won't be any jobs left for the lesser skilled.

I love technology, and I farking hate stupid CVS employees (seriously, do they search for the worst when hiring?), but I can't see this as a "net positive" for the country.  What are the existing retail clerks who make up the majority of our service economy supposed to do?  This isn't a shift like carriage makers becoming car makers at the turn of the century, this is a permanent reduction in the need for workers of any kind.

yup
just like laser scanners and UPCs put a ton of drones out of work.
you dont need to put price labels on individual products, so you need less stock boys
you can scan a large cart of products much faster, so you dont need as many checkout drones

Listen, you and I just have to accept a little piece of reality:

Some people we should just pay to stay home.

Making them work at CVS or Burger King impacts productivity negatively. We will actually be more efficient and make more money if we pay those people to stay home.

We'll give them incentives to not get pregnant/father kids, and if we get really lucky some of them may find something meaningful to contribute to society, even if it's just walking dogs.

It's something I never found an answer to. When everything that can be automated - is, what's everyone going to do? If a factory can make a thousand appliances a week with 10 workers, who is going to have money to purchase them?

There's this barrier between a normal world and the promised utopia of needlessness. Not everyone can do social jobs or technical jobs.

Even if everyone could, that wouldn't help, since there would only be a finite need for those positions also. It's not a case of not everyone being capable of being a brain surgeon, but more a case of we don't need everyone to be a brain surgeon.

Buit yeah, totally makes no sense to be able to produce a pile of stuff, if no one can afford to buy anything at all, because no one has any sort of employment anymore. Event the brain surgeons of the world wont be paid, if no one else has any money to pay them.
