It's because they didn't have a dog.  Because he didn't have to show up & shoot the dog that the whole thing came out ok....

/seriously though, someone taking an interest in their community is the kind of police we need & not the 'roided out Ramboesque thugs we always seem to read about.

Ahhem, excuse me, Free will. God basically sat us down in a room filled with legos. What you do with those legos is your choice, and the results of the choices of others.

Amazingly, when you create a vastly complex and interactive system with near infinite pieces and parts, shiat will happen that the creator can do nothing about.

Which is why Christianity is so silly: To god, you are just a single thread in a vastly complex piece of software. what makes you think he thinks of you as a precious, individual snowflake that he needs to rewrite the program to acommodate?

You can still love someone without meddling in their life. In at least some Christian perspectives, this life is a tiny blip in eternity where at least part of the purpose is to learn how good we have it as God's children... by contrast. Saving us from suffering would sort of spoil the lesson. Seems long until you're old. Then it seems short. When you're dead? Probably seems like a moment. I'll let you know when I get there, lol.

According to their website, MPDC starting pay is just above $48k, which is twice as much, sure. But I doubt officers all over the country make that much.

It wasn't the US government.  Hernando DeSoto and his crew did. To be fair, they had no idea they were spreading smallpox. But the end result was an epidemic that spread from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes, possible wiping out 65% of the population between the Appalachins and the Mississippi.

I volunteer with a church that provides free meals during school vacations (6 churches and one synagog each take a day so the kids get 7 meal deliveries a week)  to kids that don't have anything to eat when there is no school.  Their parents disgust me.  Most of the time the kids will be sitting outside waiting on us to drive up, they will then gather up their younger siblings run and hide so their parents don't take the food for themselves.  The first week is the hardest as we often don't know how many preschool kids are in the house, so we will show up with 2 meals for 2 elementary students who will then make sure their 2 younger siblings eat. Believe me the next visits we will have extra meals.

/Each meal includes a sandwich, fruit, pudding cup and snack crackers plus a cereal bowl and carton of irradiated shelf stable milk for breakfast the next day.  It is sad that is all we can manage to provide for these kids.

Basically, they give the kid a pack with enough food to last the weekend for the kid and his/her siblings. Most of the kids have to hide the food because their parents will take the food for themselves. These are the kids that only ever get the free school lunch.

I really wish there'd been a cop like that in my friends' life, growing up. Their Mom, step-dad and half-brother went to a steakhouse or really good buffet for dinner and then go bowling, maybe hit an arcade...

My friend was stuck at home, not allowed to eat ANYTHING in the house despite having had only one bowl of cereal that morning.. Just sit around, watch TV and play vids.. but hey, at least there was cable for the poor kid.

...Yeah, let's just say my friend is a  little screwed up in the head.. I'm pretty much one of five people who can stand them.

They're doing better, though.

Somebody lied to you.

Base salary for a Police Officer 1 in New Orleans is, last I checked, $23,500 per year. Obviously there are benefits, a pension program, etc., but $23.5k in New Orleans is not a high salary.

DROxINxTHExWIND: Khazar-Khum: It never said how the kid's situation got to be so bad, or if there are other kids in the family.

I'm guessing that Mom's bedroom has a revolving door, that the parents are allergic to work, there's other kids by different babbydaddys, and that Mom has a history of selling the kids' things for crack money.

That's because you watch too much TV

Nah, I just spend too much time on Fark.

nekom: Why can't there be more cops like this?  This is a good reminder that they're not ALL sociopath assholes on a power trip.

How did a cop afford that on a cop's salary?

Funny how the local Fark cop-haters don't know how to handle things when an actual good cop appears in the media.

No snark, just a comment.

iheartscotch: $5 says the kid's mom is a first class coot and pawns everything the nice officer just got her son.

/ I know a couple cops who put every extra penny they have into weekend meals for underprivileged kids. Basically, they give the kid a pack with enough food to last the weekend for the kid and his/her siblings. Most of the kids have to hide the food because their parents will take the food for themselves. These are the kids that only ever get the free school lunch.

That is farkin fantastic. Those are some good people. I grew up dirt poor, some of the parents around me were the type described. Taking shiat from their kids for themselves. Poverty is a real farked up thing and it has a circular effect that is mind blowing. Good kids lost hope, become just like their parents because they never learned anything better.
