Workers dying at the new Brazil WC stadium during construction, delaying work... Rio Olympics construction horribly behind schedule... sounds like Argentina paid the right bribes to get both the WC and the Olympics knowing well in advance that both would end up failures.

WC Brazil will happen. WC Russia in 2018 will probably go off without a hitch unless Ukraine makes it in. Then Pooty Poot may be offended. WC 2022 needs to get ripped from Qatar not only for the bribery but for the human rights violations they are racking up using slaves to build there 8 unairconditioned stadiums for a summer tournament. And there is 0.0 % chance of changing the world soccer schedules to make it a winter tourney. Probably some immigrant from Bangladesh or so.  Places like Qatar and Brazil treat them like garbage.  Pay them nothing, no safety standards.  One dies, they can replace him with five new Bangladeshi immigrants tomorrow.

Solicit bribes? I think you don't understand basic economics.  You don't pay the consumer. "The USA wants $1trillion to let you avoid an internationally-televised fark-up.  Cash only, please." "We are FIFA! You give us money!"  "Have fun with Rio."  "Wait, wait; how about $250billion in slightly shaved krugerrands?"

I actually had an opportunity to ask a gent from Brazil about the World Cup.  He was quite dissatisfied with the whole thing, and rehashed a lot of the sentiments repeated here and before, especially with a lot of the poorer sections of the country being forgotten while the rich put on this display for the world.

I wish I didn't have an interest in the World Cup, but I do.

What would be a decent thing to do in such a situation?

Yeah, that one might be interesting if Fox Sports says "Yeah we paid this amount because we thought the tourney would be in the summer, where there's no programming problems.  We didn't think you'd be stupid enough to move it to the fall/winter going up against college AND pro football.  So we want our money back."

I think the FIFA exec. committee (read: Sepp Blatter and his cronies) will be well gone before the shiat really hits the fan.  Leaving his successor to have to deal with the mess.

I just read Sepp is running to be president of FIFA again. Not  sure how long term is. I've read a lot of articles stating that FOX and all the American sponsors will sue FIFA into nothingness if they mess with the schedule. Not for nuthin', but my understanding is that all but a little tiny percentage of Brazil is a horrible, poverty stricken, crime ridden, dangerous place.  Why on Earth would they choose to hold the tournament there?!

I mean, I know soccer is hugely popular in Brazil.  But they are prone to taking to the field and ripping the ref apart (literally) for a bad call.

That's why you use subdivisions to isolate the danger.  But the problem is their insistence on using the new world man.  With a stadium like that, it's always safer to exit stage left.  Anyone nobody is forcing them to work under these conditions.  They have freewill.

They keep pushing back that date. It was going to be decided this Dec....I think its now Dec 2015 they "may" decide. Unfortunately, (here again the US pops up) American TV networks are picking up so much european soccer and getting good ratings, plus clubs coming here for summer training because A) easy money from soccer snobs here doing  club friendlies.    B) Players like coming here in summer because no one knows who the hell they are. Its probably the most relaxed they get to be all year. C) Ratings of soccer here are going up because we like good soccer. We tolerate MLS because well...we have to.  If you put Championship games against football (pro, college) basketball (pro, college) Hockey, baseball playoffs, they lose money. Plus I really doubt La Liga wants to be playing in the middle of a hotter than hell summer.

That's going to be interesting.  Not to mention how many TV networks across the globe might have a similar conflict and TV networks that don't have the rights might have their newer programming up against the World Cup.

This could have a domino effect, but it completely depends on the TV markets other than the US'.

At lot of stuff would have to be rescheduled if they move it to winter. Well, English Premier league, they play through the winter normally for instance. That's not just about who watches what on the telly, if their players are in Qatar, then they have to reschedule the Premier league.

At least most of the World Cup stadiums will actually get continued use after the tournament, soccer being huge in the country and all. The Rio Olympics, on the other hand, will spend a bunch of money on venues that, like with pretty much all other Olympics, will pretty much never be used again after the Olympics are over.
