This is actually a superb tattoo. Whoever did it has mad skills. It's not THEIR fault that the customer has shiatty taste, questionable decision making skills, and no sense of where a tattoo should go.

Poor choice, good tattoo.

Ya know, if I had played for the team, I'd be like "getting a tattoo of my number or logo isn't a bad idea". It's these lards that are just excited about the team-- or creepily specific players on that team-- that I just don't get.

Some aren't that bad, some are chuckle-worth, some are just bad taste.

The one that had me laughing uncontrollably was the attempt at the old Patriot's logo. Iconic design (so we all have a reference), done so poorly, just got funnier the longer I looked at it. Maybe it was the facial expression.

The kneeling Tebow with Bronco rising over mountains was second, just too goddamned funny of a design, whether intentional or not.

I thought a bunch of those were spectacular, but that one was the funniest of them all.  Holy crap, did I laugh at that.

You know it's bad when Jacoby Jones' Super Bowl tat doesn't make the cut.

If that is anything other than fake, then I am a left-handed chipmunk.

Likely. But the article is about 'bad' tattoos, not 'fake' tattoos. If real, it's a superbly done tattoo. If fake, it's not relevant. Ergo, for the sake of the argument, I treated it as though it is real.

Is there such a thing as a good sports tattoo?

Also, this one is why you don't piss off your tattoo artist. Dude is probably completely oblivious and things it looks great...

This. Some were in bad taste but had some very impressive artwork, others were well intended with bad art, and others were just bad all around.

The tattoo artist is a person, not a laser printer.  Doesn't he have some responsibility to stop and say, "No, I will not tattoo goatse on your armpit"?

If you're sober? And he asks you 3 or 4 times, 'dude, are you SURE?'

People make questionable tattoo choices all the time. This isn't obscene, on his forehead, or otherwise flagrant, it's just a dumb idea. Why would a tattoo artist turn down $1k+ because of that?

It's just something that always bothered me about these types of threads/pages.  There's always one or two where the consensus is that artist does an amazing job of executing a terrible tattoo. I'm not a tattoo guy--I guess the feeling in the community is that it's not the artist's problem.

Because you then will show it to others as an example of your work perhaps. "I draw complete and utter dreck to a high level of technical skill", still entails the first six words.

Nah. What they'll hear is 'dude, this guy paid me $2k for the ugliest tattoo you've ever seen. But I still rocked it, yo'.

If it was the artist's idea or design, that's one thing. But doing that is just good customer service. Like auto body shops that rice out your Kia Soul in color changing paint - your taste sucks, but damn if the paint job isn't perfectly applied.

1) Tattoo artists generally do not sign their work.

2) While every tattoo artists I've ever met had a portfolio work they've done, there's no obligation to include every tattoo they've ever done.

Pretty much the only obligation--moral, legal, or otherwise--the artists has is, you don't tattoo anyone under age, and you don't tattoo anyone under the influence.

After that, they're like anyone else.  I'm sure they'd love to work on interesting and challenging projects all the time, but sometimes you just gotta pay the rent.
