Off the top I'd say a robbery. They were a head up, financially speaking.

An 87 year old woman walking around with a severed head should not be hard to find.

True, but I was holding out for a headline like this.

"A man's body lying next to his own severed head... a head which, at this time, has no name."

"I know his name."

If they're lucky, maybe the cops can head off the bad guys.

This is old news. That said. I am really tired of the whole. "The elderly lady could not have done it because she is elderly." UM---there are no signs of a struggle or a break in... in a gated community. No one "checked in" at the gate. So really... In my world everything is possible. It is entirely possible that this woman has some sort of dementia/alzheimers and could have totally done this.

The fault with that is if your husband is beheaded in front of you.. You are going to put up a struggle if kidnapped. UNLESS and this just popped in to my head. The killer put her in the car first to go somewhere then went in and did the deed. But, even then no one had checked in at the gate. From what I understand it is a manned gate. So. :/

It's amusing to me that the police automatically think the wife is a victim of abduction.  If the genders were switched and the wife's headless body was found and the husband was missing, I'm quite sure they would assume he chopped her head off and ran away, not that he was abducted.

I don't feel like looking for the facts to back this up, but it was mentioned almost casually on the news the other night that their son was murdered 10 years ago but authorities didn't feel this was connected.  But really, that's some seriously bad luck that family has.

Shirley Dermond is 5-foot-2 and weighs 148 pounds.

She is almost 90 and tiny, how could she put up much of a struggle? And gated communities aren't exactly fortresses.

Heard on the radio that it's a gated community and there are no leads from the entrance. They think that the perps may have used the lake to gain access untracked. The wife's car and personal belongings were all left behind.

Im going with Grandchild is responsible.

These folks are 87 their kids are probably 50-60 so their grand kids are probably like 20 - 30. Grand Kids get tired of waiting for rich grand parents to die and decided they want some of that wealth now.

Well like I said in my original comment. Dementia/Alzheimers can give elderly super strength. It can come on at any time. And they can get whack a doodle in a snap and be super strong.

It is still being reported on the radio four or five times an hour (latest developments and such).  So...not so old.

So his wife she stabbed him a few times while he was strangling her, then he ate her all up, then he cured his indigestion by chopping off his head, which flew off to Valhalla with Gramps' big floppy ears.

What do I win?

My thought as well. Except in my version, Evil Grandkid (could be either gender) is late teens, maybe college, and has recruited a gang of social misfits to do the dirty deed while the grandpsycho establishes a credible alibi.

If said kid is female, it will be on Snapped.

Former Corrections employee here.  The possibility that a tiny little, slightly overweight, elderly woman (5'2", 148 lbs., 87 years of age) did this is extremely slim, no matter how demented she might have been. And really, the more demented she was, the less likely it would have been that she could have pulled it off.  People who are suffering from dementia don't turn into psychopaths, but they do become disordered, forgetful, fretful, etc.  And really, when was the last time you heard of an Alzheimer's patient committing this kind of cold-blooded murder?

This was an act of enormous contempt, directed either at this specific couple or at what they represented to the killer (e.g. elderly, retired people, the grandpa who molested him, the wealthy bastard who ruined his career prospects, etc.).

fyrewede: And really, when was the last time you heard of an Alzheimer's patient committing this kind of cold-blooded murder?

The old man could have been killed in red-hot fury, then decapitated coldly. "Cold-blooded" implies planning ahead, maybe lying in wait, and they're no evidence of that in the stories I've seen about this.

For example, killing in wartime is supposed to be "cold-blooded": you go into combat in order to kill the enemy, usually with planning, because it's your job and not because any of the "gooks" or "rag heads" did anything to you personally or have anything you want.
War is the ultimate in premeditated murder.

This was an act of enormous contempt, directed either at this specific couple or at what they represented to the killer (e.g. elderly, retired people, the grandpa who molested him, the wealthy bastard who ruined his career prospects, etc.).

Oh. Then it's okay then. And presumably the head is a trophy, the fleshy bits boiled off into soup and the skull made into a drinking cup. No problem. By why leave the old man's body, i.e. waste the meat, except maybe to taunt the rest of the world? Maybe something like "I not only stabbed him and stole his woman, I also took his head."

But still you're talking about resentment, not contempt: to quote the Wikipedia article, "resentment is directed toward a higher-status individual; anger is directed toward an equal-status individual; and contempt is directed toward a lower-status individual." So when you have contempt for a court you're placing yourself above it, because The Court does not deign to deem anyone it's equal. This is why you call the judge Your Honor, not Mister Smith and especially not Bob. But The Court is supposed to have contempt for the accused, the procedures involved show it's part of their job.
