When one of the men presented the woman with a birthday present, she hugged him.

Sex for money, hugs for gifts, same thing.

TuteTibiImperes: sithon: I always wonder why the wealthy are flocking to a moral backwater not much better than saudi arabia. Sure there are beautiful glittering buildings but it's mostly filled with backwards religious ideologues.

You never really hear about the wealthy falling victim to these shenanigans though.  I assume that if you have enough money they look the other way.

Something like 90% of their population are foreign workers, like this woman. They functionally don't have any rights under law there.

There is enough money to get me to visit the UAE. It's not a rediculously large sum, but it is a higher sum than I would ever be offered and my behavior will best be described as laconic.

As someone who's actually been to Dubai (on deployment)...why are we allied with these asshats?  Oh, right.  Silly me, I forgot they have oil.

fifthhorseman: The whole no booze thing is a complete deal-breaker for me.

Alcohol is widely available in the UAE. So is porn on the internet.

Been to the UAE more times than i even want to think about on deployment, never had a problem and never saw anyone have any problems that they didn't make for themselves. Same basic rule applies there that applies everywhere else, don't be an asshat and make a spectacle of yourself and everything will be fine.

There is plenty of booze there. Lot's of clubs and pubs. There is more to the middle-east than Saudi.

Saudis go to Dubai, Bahrain, Cairo, Beirut etc etc to sin. They're a PITA: the world's worst tourists.

Arumat: Alright, but that just brings me back to my original question.  Why the hell are we allied with these asshats?

You already answered that yourself

I know you are referring to the middle east in general, but Dubai has (virtually) no oil. This is why they started Emirates and have built themselves into a weird mix of a mall, Las Vegas, Chinese Ghost City, and "tourist" "attraction" with such things as an indoor ski slope.

You are thinking of Abu Dhabi, the one that bailed out Dubai and forced them to rename Burj Al-Dubao, the worlds largest penis building, after their Emir, Burj Al-Khalifa.

The desert will swallow those cities again soon enough.

Sooner the better and don't get me started on puritans in the US.

The thing about the "puritans" is that you can tell what it is they really want or have a fetish about, based on how much they want to control it or make it go away.
