Pretty much this.  If they manage to make a fun movie to watch out of it, all the better, but if it looks like it'll suck, it's not like that will significantly diminish my entertainment options.

Can I just get a recirding of Jen's voice part without having to sit through the movie? I'll pay the same price for it.

I am both intrigued and disheartened by this news. Hound was the first Transformer I ever bought. I'm glad John Goodman is doing the voice, but I'm terrified of what Michael Bay is going to do.

I was at EmeraldCityComiCon this year, talking to a guy in a Grimlock hoodie. Turns out, he works for Hasbro as a design artist. We were talking about the new movie, and he had the look of someone trying to toe the company line, but with the shell-shocked eyes of someone who had his soul ripped away after looking at the Necronomicon.

I don't remember an Autobot named Drift.

I remember Hound, but his voice was nothing like John Goodman.

Can't really fault either one of them for taking this gig. They're going to make 6-figures for what boils down to about ten hours of work in a recording studio.

Who wouldn't snatch up an easy paycheck like that, even if it was Michael Bay behind it?

Lol, it's not a high road, it's that I would pay handsomely just to listen to his voice. And I could, y'know, drive a car or cook a meal or something instead of sitting in a cinema seat trying to seperate him out from the sound effects.

Against better judgment I'm going to give this one a chance. Detested Shia and Fox (and later her replacement) in the first along with the pieces of the other 2 films I tried to watched.  Films seemed more about a sniveling human brat than giant robots being giant robots.

With this new one, Marky Mark can actually be a decent actor from time to time, so at least this film has that going for it. Looking at his IMDB it seems Ted 2 has been greenlit which is interesting.
At least the Transformers themselves don't look completely horrible, unlike that Turtles abomination.

This, though putting Drift in a Transformers movie with mostly actual G1 characters? Or using Drift at all? Fail.

Using Doritu-kun and make him look like Bludgeon? Double Fail

If they were gonna use Dorito, they should have gone with his latest MTMTE look.

/Dorito-kun is a testament to Roberts' writing skills, to make you care about a character you hated when first introduced in the IDW universe.

Drift was created some years ago for the IDW comics. The problem is that when he was introduced, he was like a combination of Wolverine and Wesley Crusher, because he was the pet character of the main writer.

My son wanted to watch the original series the other day on Netflix. Never try to rewatch those 80s cartoons if you want to retain fond memories of your childhood. The show jumped from scene to scene so quickly that I felt like I was watching something written by an ADHD hummingbird high on pixie sticks.

The thing is, studios re-boot these properties because they know nostalgia porn sells.  But if you're going to sell a demographic on a brand of nostalgia they enjoy consuming, try and be a little more faithful to the brand.  Transformers was about cheesy 80s action cartoon plots and characters, and GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING EACH OTHER.

What we got was a movie too heavily focused on human characters, made worse by terrible casting and Attack of the Clones-level of bad dialogue.  And when the robots finally did fight, half the time you couldn't really see what was going on because of awful cinematography.

/VG Cats wasn't all that hyperbolic when they called it "Dawson's Creek with robots".

Drift has been around since Generation 1 of Transformers. Decepticon named Deadlock who switched sides to the Autobots. I think he only appeared in the comic book series though.

Can't they just take the money from this film and make Pacific Rim 2 instead?  It is amazing how much better a ridiculous robot movie can be when the viewer can tell WTF is happening during battles.

The first one was acceptable.  I wasn't expecting some masterpiece or anything and it was reasonable enough.  I prefer to not think about anything after the first though.

Pacific Rim 2 is going to happen on its own right, just as soon as a good script gets finished it seems.

The Decepticons also had zero personality.  Other than the cop car and Megatron, I don't think any of them had any lines.  Starscream maybe had one or two.

What had they be doing for the past one hundred years waiting for Megatron to thaw out?  Wouldn't that fighter squadron notice they have an extra F-22 parked on their flightline?

Not true. Lots of decepticons had personality. Starscream had almost as many lines as Megatron. In some episodes it was more. Soundwave was awesome and Rumble was 10 lbs of crazy in a 5 lb cassette tape.

Problem with the new movies is that they crap all over older fans for the most part when they didn't have to. They could have thrown us some bones without upsetting newer younger fans. My beefs : No megatron vs starscream. Their interplay was an integral part of the series and helped keep things fresh. Aside from one missile shot from starscream into megatron that you could barely see this is gone. Crap quick cutting cinematography. I want to see giant robots battle. The fight scenes are blurry jumpy crap. And I like shaky cam when its done right. Too.many whiny crap humans. Can I have some giant robots in my giant robot movie? I agree with others that you can't tell them apart either. I want to hear ironhide rag on deceptirats, or something aside from optimistic being the eternal perfect leader and some vaguely racist caricatures. I loved the cartoon as a kid, and my son has seen all the cartoon episodes even the ones where they went all voltron with witches and stuff. But the movies are meh at best. By far the best moment of the movies was the first time optimistic rolled up in truck form. I got misty eyes on that one. All they need to do now to finish the ruination is have stupid ass hot rod intervene and get optimus killed.

That.

If anything, I'll allow Revenge of the Fallen as being lacking - the story was all over the map there. The other movies were just solid fun, and I'm hoping Age of Extinction will be more of the same or better...even if the story seems to resemble Underworld Awakening a bit.

It's more than just that. PR just had people who'd actually tried to make a story that made some sense, with some ideas, with interesting characters and that looked farking cool in all sorts of ways. I don't think it entirely succeeded, but Michael Bay just poops out his movies. There's no sense of even trying to make a good film.
