$3.2 billion?  Must be for the music streaming service and not the crappy headphones.

That's an odd pairing.  Beats has always struck me as overpriced and more focused on marketing that quality.

My HP lappy is co-branded with Beats speakers.

It sounds better than any other laptop I ever had but that's not saying a hell of a lot.  In fact collaborative pairing with Ye Olde Victrola Phonography Bugles and What'd Ya Say Sonny Earhorns would have been better than my previous laptops.

Let's say this iPod represents all of the hipster smug in the New York area. According to this morning's sample it will be an iPod, 35 feet long and weighing approximately 600 pounds.

Beats cans are consumer electronics shiat. Not a single I know DJ who isn't complete farking clown shoes would use BBDs. Get some Sennhieser or AKGs 10 times the quality at a third of the price.

Beat is overpriced and more focused on marketing than quality.  It was their intent all along.  When you get your products built by Monster, you now you're getting over priced crap.

I didn't realize monster built the beats headphones, that explains the price of both.  I got a sweet deal on some wireless klipsch on boxing day. Good enough for what I use them for.

They used to, but it is well worth reading How Dr Dre took Monster to the cleaners with Beats. If you dislike Monster, and you should, it is a great story. I'm not a fan of Beats but they aren't dicks like Monster Cable.

That's what I came to say. No matter the application, no matter the genre or music, no matter the equalizer settings... a $60 set of Sennheiser headphones will sound better than anything with a circle-B logo.

/I've had great-sounding Sony headphones too - but they aren't nearly as durable

Well if anyone knows about selling average consumer electronics at an extremely inflated price to people who will buy just about anything if a trendy marketing campaign tells them to, it's Apple. Sounds like a perfect match.

I have two pair I stole years ago from the UT Tyler music department. Those things are indestructible. But yeah Beats cans will run like 3 bills minimum for their "studio pro" line and those one lung Sonys kick the shiat out them any day of the farking week.

The only times I've ever seen anyone with BBD headphones were the guys who wear the giant over-ear headphones at the gym, and seem to enjoy making lots of noise throwing the weights down, looking at themselves in the mirror, and mean-mugging anyone who happens to glance at them. IE, doucehbags. I'd say they have their target audience figured out completely.

I'm on my second pair of Grado's.  The first pair lasted fifteen years before I twisted the cord so much so often that the connections gave out.   And they are true hipster cool, you look like a radio operator form the 1920's.  Not that I would care about that.  The only drawback to the open design is that if you have them cranked, everyone in the room can hear you.

Clearly, Apple got where they were with all that marketing...

Having said that, Beats is one of those companies that churns out a crap product with a blingy design and celebrity endorsements to build a totally synthetic, crappy brand for mouth-breathers to overpay for. Apple has a lot of things they need to be fixing in the empire - the App Store is utterly broken (with rip-off IAP games and junk dominating sales), the developer relationships are junk, iOS has some technical cruft that requires fixing, Apple's cloud initiatives are 2 generations behind... As an Apple fan, I can list about a dozen things about Apple that need changing. None of them are fixed by Apple acquiring Beats. Google is investing billions of dollars in interesting companies that are the future; Apple is buying bling. Pathetic.

This is the first move Apple has made since Jobs died where you can literally say "Never woulda happened if Jobs was around..."

Marketing is more than just paying for ads. Furthermore, that could just mean Apple (to their credit) is smart and efficient with their ad dollars. Plenty of attention whores have relied on marketing over substance without spending a dime on official "advertising."

But personally I think Apple today is at least as much about substance as anyone else. Unlike with Mac computers, the vast majority of iPhone and iPad owners I know don't give a fark about the badge--they bought what was a quality product that met their needs at a competitive price point.

Someone gave me some Bose noise cancelling headphones for christmas a couple years ago. The $299 ones. They are comfortable and sound great, but I do forget to turn them off, which kills the battery and pisses me off.

I tried beats on once, and without even listening to them I determined that the Bose were more comfortable and designed for the human ear.

Beats are the equivalent of mass produced $200 basketball sneakers. Nice, but overpriced.

That's probably got a lot more to do with it. Apple make phones, tablets and computers. Samsung make phones, tablets, computers, televisions, bluray players, washing machines, fridge freezers, vacuum cleaners, microwave ovens, cameras, printers, air conditioners and much more as well as non consumer products like ultrasound scanners, panels, chips etc etc.

I don't doubt that Samsung spend more on advertising their phones than Apple since Apple get rabid bloggers and journalists to do a lot of their work for them but the difference isn't as big as that graph suggests.

Bingo. And that didn't just naturally happen...great marketing when you can get your customers to do your job for you. As long as your products don't suck, you're golden. And Apple stuff doesn't suck.

I bought a couple guitar cables from Monoprice. I can hear a thud when I step on them. Good cables are shielded, so if they get slapped around, it doesn't disturb the signal chain. YMMV.
