I had an employee who not once, but twice, cooked leftover catfish in the microwave in a very small breakroom with no windows.
I almost farking puked.

Who the f*ck microwaves kimchi?

2014-05-08 01:53:35 PM
Heh.  I had a co-worker with a sensitive nose.  First time I brought in anything for lunch that wasn't as bland as bologna and cheese on white with mayo, he'd complain about the smell.

So I started bringing kimchi for lunch.  Because fark you.

/Loves me some good kimchi

I had a co-worker that more than once brought durian into our cube farm office when she was pregnant.  Yeah, I know it's a traditional nutrient-rich food for pregnant Asian mothers, but NOT COOL.

Oh, and the VP I worked for there wore so much perfume that you could smell her coming about 10 seconds before she got to your desk.

It was almost as if that company was hard of smelling or something.

I eat kimchi and tuna fish in the office all the time.  The only time we had a problem was when I threw some out on a Friday afternoon and by Monday the office smelled like Rosie O'Donnell's crack sweat.  I was not very popular that day.

Please don't.
Sick of people stinking up the floor microwaving fish and burning popcorn.

Had a co-worker who wore so much perfume that you could literally taste it in your mouth when she walked past. Insta-headache for some of us too.

This despite office rules stating that strong scents (cologne, perfume, aftershave, etc.) weren't allowed due to allergies/sensitivities of other employees. She got written up at least three times that I know of and was sent to the ladies' room to wash off as much of the perfume as possible. The fourth time she got suspended for a week without pay and was sent home.

Everywhere I have worked had a microwave that constantly smelled like a cat crapped on a wheel of Parmesan and someone nuked it for an hour.  I don't even understand how a microwave can absorb smells like that, since it's all sheet metal.

Also, one of the smartest women I have ever know was a nurse who worked with me, who would burn her popcorn into oblivion every night because she was convinced that it burned off the calories.  She weighed all of 110 lbs.  She pissed off the entire ER every shift she worked.

Had a supervisor who whenever she got mad at someone in the department would walk through, spraying herself with perfume, even though she KNEW that allergies and asthma ruled in that room. Talk about a hostile workplace.

dittybopper: So I started bringing kimchi for lunch.  Because fark you.

I had a Korean coworker who'd whip up "quick kimchi" in the service bar for herself. Now, I like kimchi and all, but it would smell like the sewer main broke in the restaurant.

/sesame leaf kimchi ftw?

2014-05-08 04:55:51 PM
one of the guys here warms up the previous evening's "filet o fish" in the microwave which is only competitive in terms of stench with the horrible clam chowder that he usually eats

2014-05-08 04:57:12 PM
I worked with a bunch of Vietnamese women who would bring these odd concoctions to work, and pop them in the microwave for lunch. They often included tiny dried shrimp, and fish sauce. The smell was deplorable. I believe a memo was posted in the lunchroom in Vietnamese and English, and the problem stopped. Lovely people though.

Office odors, especially on women, are better solved with verbal beratement than policy.

"Must you go out of your way to offend the senses"?
"You smell like you look"

...etc

2014-05-08 05:03:44 PM
I'll admit it. I nuked left over fish AND broccoli once at the office. Nobody complained but I noticed the odor. The next time I used better judgement and asked the cooks in the buildings kitchen to re-heat the fish for me.

2014-05-08 05:05:00 PM
i worked for a large korean manufacturing firm...

they ate kimchi at the company lunchroom buffet...
and then pissed all over the floors in the men's room.

i think they truly thought it was their duty to make life hard for the janitors.  inflated their egos, etc.

The Goddamn Batman: Who the f*ck microwaves kimchi?

I was wondering the same thing.

2014-05-08 05:06:43 PM
You ever microwave sardines? The break room will never be the same.

2014-05-08 05:06:45 PM
For some inexplicable reason, one of the return ducts for our office air handler was in the break room, and somehow ended up upstairs in the executive offices.  Rather than fix the problem, they banned popcorn outright after someone lit a bag on fire.  So, we put a microwave in the server room since it has a closed system and only a few people had access to it anyway.

I love pot stickers. One time I brought some into work for a dinner meeting, sat down behind some unsuspecting coworkers and opened up the Tupperware. The black girl on the couch in front of me JUMPED up and bolted for the door, screaming something about those "damned Asian people" farting in her g'damn face. The Vietnamese girls immediately started shouting in Vietnamese, and me, the token white girl, laughed until I peed myself. I still laugh aloud at the memory of it. Damn, that was funny.

There are rules at my (open plan) office about no smelly food.  A coworker brings in fried mackerel for lunch about three times a week.  After he's reheated it the whole place reeks of burnt greasy fish.  I know at least six people have complained to the department head who in turn has asked the fishy offender to knock it off but the arse-for-brains thinks he's above all such petty concerns.

2014-05-08 05:08:34 PM
They like to burn the coffee here. And one of the guys has a rotating radiant heat oven thing that burns stuff too.

Place I used to work had an oven that no one used. a new employee decided to bake a pizza and almost burned the place down preheating, because of the dust inside.

2014-05-08 05:09:56 PM
farking microwaved chitlins... And being the only white guy at work.

2014-05-08 05:10:55 PM
This guy, not me, put expired popcorn in the microwave, set it for 10 minutes and walked away.  We stopped it at four minutes but it still stunk up the place.  The very next day, he did it again.  He had to carry the microwave outside to air it out.

I wonder if that would be better or worse than Rosie O'Donnell (When she was bigger) In tight leather for several hours?

They banned fish from the microwaves here. Someone was putting fish in until it was dried up and reeked of low tide. One time it was so bad half the floor stank of fish for days. I think the only worse thing I ever smelled was a woman that had a seizure or some kind of attack at work and threw up all over the elevator lobby. No matter what they did the smell would not go away and they were too cheap to just rip up the carpet.

2014-05-08 05:16:01 PM
Missing from the 'smelly office smells list': People from poor countries (going to make this is nondiscriminatory as possible) rotating onsite who don't understand you're supposed to shower more than once a week

/We had a meeting room that took literally DAYS to air out from BO smell from one guy who was in it for 30 minutes

We had one idiot try cooking sausage patties in toaster oven. Smelled good at first, but the result was a 30 minute fire alarm and evacuation of the building.

Burnt popcorn was always good for a break in the day as well.

There was nothing in the Employee Handbook that said you couldn't crap in your waste basket but everybody acted like it was against the rules.

I still have massive hate for a coworker who microwaved leftover fish for lunch almost every single day.  In a tiny breakroom, no windows, door always shut.  Oh, it still makes me angry.

/she had horrible breath, too

A coworker used to reheat fish in the break room right next to my office.
I asked her why she used this break room when there was one right next to her office?
She said the smell bothered people near the other break room.

What's their next breaking story?

The SE asian women at a place I worked at about 20 years ago would cram as much into the microwave as possible then run it for 10-12 minutes. Over-nuked fish head soup...mmmmmmm.

Kimchi, rice, fried seaweed. SO good.

My solution:

While they're preparing their stinkfest of a dish, walk close by them and let a massive one rip right in front of their plate.

Calmly explain that some other people were complaining about the horrid stench coming from that food there, and you are just doing what you can to help improve the odors in the place.

Please have a meltdown about how you just can't handle the ketchup packets piling up in the fridge.......

Reminds of the smell at the company gym when working out with Indians. Must be the currie.

Maybe they went to the gym and shiat themselves. Be a little compassionate.

Since I am the only employee, I don't have to worry about such things, as it's actually my own microwave I bought myself, and my own food.  I'd be concerned about bad smells and burned food, because I am also the only business in the building.  Who would be using my oven?

I get this steam-in-bag stuff called Tuscan Broccoli that I eat for lunch a few times a week. The woman who sits nearest the employee kitchen apparently hates the smell, as does our assistant manager. One he walked by and asked if there was a sewage leak in the kitchen. The stuff does smell like poop.

maybe if you guys were actually working instead of hanging around the break room you wouldn't notice that smell. maybe the reasons indians and asians are taking all of your jobs is because they don't let things like "a smell i'm not accustomed to" get in the way of their work.

here, at KIA, they bring it in by the coolers, and let it sit all day in the entrance hallway. it's bad.
