I blame Fred Thompson for starting him in a life of scary old people commercials.

I've never seen a complete episode of Law & Order: SVU.  Every time I would come across it while channel-surfing, it was always rape, rape, then more rape.

/Worse than the Lifetime channel.

The show is definitely long in the tooth. But the recent addition of Donal Logue to the cast has given it a bit of a shot in the arm.

Talking about rape on a show about sex crimes? That's crazy.

I'm still perturbed that NBC didn't go for a 21st season of L&O: Original Recipe.

all I can think of when I hear about Law and Order is that John Mulaney bit about Ice Cube not understanding sex crimes

Both look likely for renewal. Granted I'm getting this from an IGN article, but their reasoning is pretty sound.

I could see that, though I would add that I bet Community's renewal will come with an announcement that it will be the show's last season. Though I don't really know where they could go with the show, it would be nice to have a real send off to the show and not an open-ended "The End?" type season finale; though an entire season of Community going balls to the wall crazy isn't entirely enticing.

Omnis_evil_twin: I loved the show a lot more before it became Lady Detective: The Olivia Benson Story a Litetime Original Series.

The ratings have actually been better when that Olivia Benson's rapist storyline has come up this season.  It's better than last night when they went with a "current" Roman Polanski rip off story.

I wonder if more cab drivers will be able to instantly recall their passenger's mental state from six months ago.  Or if the state attorney will bend the rules in the name of justice.  Or if more moderately attractive wealthy white people will turn out to be the real killers after the less attractive, poor, but noble brown people are accused first.  Or if file clerks will just happen to have those ten year old case files right at hand.  Or if loutish frat boys will be turned in by dignified homeless people.

Still, I'd rather sit through a Law & Order marathon than 95% of other television shows out there.

Omnis_evil_twin: I loved the show a lot more before it became Lady Detective: The Olivia Benson Story a Litetime Original Series.

In college, I wrote a short paper on L&O (probably 2001ish). I remember a quotation from S. Epatha Merkerson (LT Anita van Buren) - they'd asked her how the show's popularity was able to endure despite the then-10 seasons and several major lineup changes, and to outlasting shows like NYPD Blue, and she responded: "Stick to the stories, tell less about the characters."

That's what L&O was originally about - faceless cops (like the "Dragnet guys" Paul Sorvino and Chris Noth and Jerry Orbach, but falling off once they hired Ben Bratt) and faceless (A)DAs (pre-insanity Michael Moriarty, and ...Jubal Early Robinette, whose real name I can't remember - but once Jack McCoy showed up, c'mon; he's Jack farking McCoy) solving the problems of people with faces.

scottydoesntknow: FeedTheCollapse: meh, when do we find out about Community and Hannibal?

I wouldn't call either "likely" for renewal.  Community's ratings are terrible but it could be saved simply because every other NBC comedy has also been terrible.

Hannibal, likewise, has not had good ratings, but it's an international co-production, so the finances are a little wonky.

I don't like call shows that won't get renewed on their own merits "likely."  It's possible, and probably wouldn't be surprising, but it wouldn't be surprising if either or both were canceled either.

I would like to see that show on HBO or the like where they could actually show the crimes in full shocking detail. That would be something to see.

Because people have a sick fascination with sex crimes

There's a lot of awful in that show, a lot of the secondary actors are just horrible. Ice Cube is pretty bad too.

I think it's because they canceled the original, even though it was still doing well (Not crazy numbers, but good for circa 2010 NBC). Then someone realized what a stupid idea that was, and luckily one L&O still existed. Hence SVU will go on forever. It'll be on longer than the Simpsons and Gunsmoke.

2014-05-08 11:53:16 AM
from someone's twitter feed: "A grouping of Law and Order episodes is called a dundun."

it should actually be a thing, honestly.  i love a nice brick of back-to-back L&O episodes and dundun is just kind of perfect.

I liked the cast they had in the last season.  I was really surprised they ended it.

In contrast, the demise of LO:CI could be seen coming from miles away.

I originally thought you meant Henry Rollins, but I still debated whether it was worth correcting.

the Rollins hate is a bit surprising, but the show just isnt the same for me without Meloni.  bringing that guy from Cold Case just wasnt a good replacement.  He's not a bad actor but his character is just too formulaic or something.

They made the show more about the detectives private lives than about cases.  I'm more interested in cases, not soap opera stuff.  Hint at their background lives but dont make them the foreground stories.

2014-05-08 12:29:50 PM
Once Neal Baer left as show runner it started going down hill, it used to be one of my favourite shows, we'd get together and laugh at the shiat stabler says and does, but now it's worse then an Oxygen original movie.

/At least we have Arrow
//"The Downloaded Child" makes for a good series finale

I'm also fairly certain that with the exception of the eyes and mouth her face never moved.  Just that same blank expression the whole frigging time.
