The publisher of such gaming franchises as "The Legend of Zelda" and "Mario Bros."

Thanks for pointing that out, I had no idea the Zelda and Mario franchises were Nintendo.

Just play The Sims for that level of avatar intimacy. Not only do they allow gay couples, but also spousal abuse, murder and adultery.

Lot of people don't intend to do things that they end up doing. You may not have intended the game to be some sort of social commentary, but now it is. The questions you need to ask yourselves now are (1) is the money we could potentially lose by refusing to make a small programming change (probably something that could be released as a downloadable update?) worth the effort that would go into making such a change?; and (2) Do we want to be perceived, even unintentionally, as supporting an agenda that is driven by hate and division when we have spent so much time building our brand as bringing people together? I mean, really, as a business those are the questions to ask. As people, the question to ask yourself is essentially "Is ignoring or dismissing the existence and life of tens of millions of people the kind of person I want to be?" But I understand that that particular question is not usually one that carries a lot of weight with stockholders.

Lemme guess, no nudity, furries, transexuals, bondage, or farking either, right? Sounds like someone at Nintendo finally played Second Life, and said to themselves, "Hey, we should totally do our own version of this game, but let's do it without all the reasons people play it. No way this could fail!"

So I'm playing CK2 and I need my heir and his wife to have a kid, but they just refuse to and things are growing worrisome. Then I find out that the little punk is sleeping around with the commonfolk and producing a bunch of bastards instead of making a legitimate heir. What's the deal here?! I tell him to quit it. So shortly after I get an event where my daughter-in-law comes into my room and seduces me...

Nine months later, my heir mysteriously had a son! Thankfully he didn't suspect anything... off. Considering it was clear that he and his wife had never been in bed together.

I felt like I should be ashamed on some level.

Some things about this (since I'm majorly looking forward to this game):

1) Tomodachi Life initially did allow same-sex marriages in Japan, but that was due to a glitch in the way the game could import elements from the DS version of the game to the 3DS sequel (which is the one coming out state side) and was patched almost immediately after discovery. The intention was never there in the Japanese release despite rumors that gay marriage was taken out of the international release being rampant.

2) Like Fire Emblem: Awakening a large part of the marriage feature is that it results in children who have the combined attributes of both parents. It's technically possible to add adoption/genetic splicing to get the same effect with children for two members of the same sex, but would likely require a significant overhaul of the code to add these modifications compared to making a "male" or "female" Mii that looks like the opposite gender (of course, this is problematic for the issue of gendered pronouns and being identified as "mother" or "father" despite being cis and gay.)

3) Nintendo does have a problematic history with gay characters: the ports of The Sims on DS disabled all same sex romance options, so Nintendo can't complain that they're being unfairly maligned when they have a problematic history some of which is covered here.

Again, really looking forward to this game, if only to join in on the insanity that is singing Morgan Freeman.

Just because they don't have gay couples doesn't mean they're against gay marriage. They just don't want to be in a controversial position.

Gay marriage advocates are making a big fuss out of nothing here, and this is coming from someone who supports gay unions.

1.- This game has exactly ZERO effect on our daily lives so no need to throw a hissy fit over it.
2.- This game doesn't feature bisexuals either, does that mean they're against it? What about polyamory people? Why doesn't it have an option to make your character from any nationality and ethnicity? Why are Cree people being discriminated against? See where this goes?
3.- What's going to happen when Nintendo publishes the game with gay relationships and conservative parents find out?
4.- The game allows you to technically make gay couples, people are making a big fuss about it because of a patch that was totally unrelated to this:

""There actually was a misconception over what the issue in December was," product marketing manager Bill Trinen told IGN last April. "There were two things that were going on at the time that essentially were grouped together as one. The first, that there was a patch. And what the patch was fixing was actually a data leak."

"The other thing that was going on was that quite a few Japanese players were dressing up Mii characters," Trinen explained. "Essentially they would create a male version of a Mii character and assign their gender as female, and that was how the two males were able to have a baby."

The patch did not change the fact that players could do that.

It only addressed the data transfer issue according to Trinen. "Because we didn't have the DS version [in the West], there is no data transfer issue for us," Trinen said. "So it was actually two separate things that got lumped together into one piece of confusion that resulted in people not quite understanding what had gone on.

So once again, people are making a BIG FUSS out of nothing.

Dude, they are localizing a game. Changing a fundamental aspect of the game to appease a small percentage of the population is not within that scope. When you complain about something, you need to look hard at what you are saying because that is intentional commentary, and right now it isn't saying good things about you. It makes you look selfish and entitled. Not everything is about you and your lifestyle and it is just fine that way.

They've already weathered 3 bad years. I don't see them doing well in the next 3 either.

I do agree that it won't shut them down, but they are hemorrhaging money right now and don't seem to have a viable plan for the near future.

True, but the 3DS also fell below expectations (expected to sell 13.5 million and sold 12.2). Not that bad of a miss when you're talking in the millions, but it's still not a pleasant sight.
