(Mother Nature Network)   Sound engineers created Godzilla's shriek by removing a string from a contrabass and rubbing it with gloves soaked in pine tar. And you can spell it as 'Mrawww,' 'Skreeongk,' or 'Skreeonk'   (mnn.com) divider line 25

I prefer the sound of a key on a piano string.

Sound engineer sounds like an awesome job.

Step 1. Get high
Step 2. Do some really weird stuff nobody would think of doing
Step 3. Record what it sounds like.
Step 4. Profit.

They forgot to mention a couple of things.  Like, that there was only one contrabass in Japan at the time, that Akira Ikfukube had never used one in his life and did it based on his deduction of what the instrument should sound like.

Then he did a bit of processing to the recorded tracks (mainly, adding echo).

My kid has a Godzilla hand puppet and if you squeeze the jaws just right, it has a little soundbox that makes the 'Skreeonk'. She had a doll's angel wings outfit she put on it, and we used it for a tree topper one Christmas.

Also, "what do you call that sound" trifecta in play

See, that's a proper feature for a Godzilla toy.

I had one of the Godzilla toys on this page http://www.toysyouhad.com/shogun.htm as a kid. It didn't have any of the back spines, had something that looked like red fire coming out of its mouth... and a spring-loaded fist that could be launched across the room. You know... just like he had in the movies?
