Meh.  I liked it better when it was called "Ultraman".

My question is which series would they use they're some 35+ sentai series to choose from, I guess it all just comes down to if they market for nostalgic adults or kids. To be honest though I would love a movie with half as much plot as go-busters.

2014-05-07 03:53:48 PM
They did that. It was called Pacific Rim. It did ok.

2014-05-07 03:58:22 PM
They made a Power Rangers movie already.  It was called 'Mighty Morphing Power Rangers'.  And Ivan Ooze was the awesome bad guy.

And Yellow Ranger was the hottest Ranger.

2014-05-07 04:05:57 PM
My four year old has gotten really into them. He took his first karate class last week and kept telling his mom "Look, it's power rangers!" at the adults that were training.

I'm sure there's a market for it.

wasn't the series taken from japanese series footage with spliced in american scenes, raymond burr godzilla style?

Haven't they consistently been producing Power Rangers series since the 90s? There were like 30 different versions on Netflix

2014-05-07 04:10:34 PM
Emma Lahana is probably my favorite former Power Ranger, though I wasn't watching it by the time she came around. Though when I was younger it was the first Pink Ranger from Lost Galaxy...

FTA: As Scott Mendelson of Forbes writes this week, "I've been saying for years that eventually some studio would get the film rights to these characters, spend $100 million-$150 million on the project, craft a somewhat more serious and grounded variation of the property, presumably with an origin story told in the Rise of the Guardians/X-Men mold, along with truly bombastic action sequences, and then gross $500 million worldwide."

That man is on drugs. Wow.

I'm game. It's not like MMPR is the height of television. A big budget revival might be fun.

Because he's discovered the alchemical formula that studios have been dumping billions into trying to harness?

If his main goal is profit, I'd say the drugs are working.

Fun fact: the slutty girl from Cabin in the Woods was a power ranger.
Another fun fact: The topless foreign exchange student in Not Another Teen Movie was a power ranger.

Anyhoo, a lot of the story elements for power rangers have been successful lately.  I mean, transforming battle suits, alien invasions, giant fighting robots... it's all sort of commonplace for big budget movies.  I think a lot of people just draw the line at the color coding for some reason.

I can see that.  Lot of people who watched it as kids have kids now, it gets the Michael Bay Transformers treatment but with more kung fu and it could do 500mil worldwide.

I didn't like the Transformers movies, but at least no one could say that they crapped all over the source material for this one.

As long as it's a continuance and not a reboot. That way the former members can do cameos and even play some parts as the guiding adults.

God, no. Maybe two of the original cast actually had acting ability. The Pink one and the Green/White one. The rest were hilariously bad.

Come to think of it though, the Green/White Ranger shows up in the new shows as a mentor from time to time. So maybe it could work.

Only if the American version can have deaths like the Sentai shows have.  MagiRangers starts with the mother of the team getting killed before their eyes.  (she got better)  Jetman's villains pretty much kill a large part of Japan's population through some of their Monster-Of-The-Week's various methods.  Zyuranger's Green Ranger was killed, and never replaced.  And currently, ToQger's team may or may not be already dead, and are fighting to get a saving throw and gain a continue.  (I think they're actually little kids in teen bodies, because IMAGINATION!)

Funfact #3
Thuy Trang who played the original Yellow ranger trini was killed in a car accident.

Funfact #4 David Yost who played the original Blue ranger Billy Cranston is Gay.

There was never a white ranger. Tommy will always be the Green Ranger in my heart.

God, the things I wanted to do with the original blue ranger back in the day.  Not that I had any great idea how any of it worked, I just knew I wanted to try things.  Too bad he's on the other team.

That.

I am saying there is no way Power Rangers turns a profit at $125 million dollar price tag.

2014-05-07 05:18:46 PM
Seems like the best way to profit off of that franchise is just tons of low budget strait to dvd/netflix/whatever offerings.

Giving it a movie budget will probably kill the campy feel and you'll just end up with a shiatty Transformers/Pacific Rim type thing. Not that there isn't money in that, but the margins might be better for the low rent stuff.

So when do we get a M.A.S.K. movie?

2014-05-07 05:21:16 PM
I used to think it was just the baby boomers who got raging boners over nostalgic things, butevidently not. I mean, I recognize that probably 75% of what I liked as a kid was crap. I was the biggest Ninja Turtle fan back then but I have zero interest in seeing the new movie or any reboot of any kind. It makes sense if you have kids of your own, I guess, but for everyone else: Is your life so terrible that you want to pretend you're 12 or something?

Yeah.  It might suck (like a 99% chance of it) but it'll make money.

Jim from Saint Paul: That.

Big budget action movies with minimal dialog and large explosions make that back on the international market in the first week.  Make it less silly and more action and robots fighting monsters with special effects that don't suck and it'd profit.  No one is making those movies for the US market anymore except to maybe pay back what they spent making it, the international market would eat it up.  Hell with less dialog and most of the characters in full costume it'd be an even easier sell.

That's the fun part!
/Agrees with the green/white ranger comment too.

I'd like to see them make this, but then give it to Toei to re-edit it with a different story and japanese actors for the scenes out of the suits. Two movies for the price of one and it continues the tradition.

Considering about 75% of Power Rangers was made after the 90s (it's still in production today), not sure it's really a 90s show.

I think because it was at peak popularity in the 90's and most of the nostalgia crowd (which the movie will be aiming for) grew up on the 90s version.  Similarly, when they make a live action pokemon movie 5-10 years from now, it will feature Ash, Misty, and Brock instead of whoever is on that show now.

Perhaps, but the height of the series in terms of American popularity was certainly the 90's. How many McDonald's happy mean toys do you see of the current incarnations of that show? How many people dress up in Power Rangers Halloween costumes that aren't from the first few seasons? Power Rangers were HUGE in the 90's. Now it's just another mediocre show. Granted it was always mediocre, but during the mid-late 90's Power Rangers was the show to watch.

actually if you include Super Sentai, the Japanese series from which the footage for Power rangers is taken from a lot came before the 1990s as the series started in 1975

Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger  the series which became MIghty Morphin Power Rangers. debuted in 1992.

LOVED this as a kid in the 90's.

analogmedium.com

Had the videogame, the toys, and comics. Oddly, none of the other kids I knew liked it.

And had the strangest boner for Jenny around that time too (hey, puberty does odd things, especially before the age of internet porn and no ready access to actual porn):

fc04.deviantart.net

Also, I'd add 'Dragon Warrior' to that list. There's a few vids on Youtube, but they're hard to come by.

They are still huge. Really. My quasi-gf's 5 year old was one of the current ones last Halloween, and always wants the toys. It's not as big (1998 was the highest point, I gather), but they aren't going away soon either.

If they do, do a movie it has to follow sentai closer the ending to go-busters had me crying. Sadly if it does happen it'll more than likely end up a cluster f&%# like kyoryuger with their ten man team and super red who can do no wrong.

Did it better.

Original was more violent, more rapey and had cannibals.
