The zoo exists in Delaware county. It is paid for by Franklin County residents. This levy would have nearly doubled the property taxes collected against homeowners in Franklin county. This was to place a satellite zoo downtown Columbus(Franklin county seat). Obviously the voters think one zoo in a city this size is enough. Maybe if Delaware county residents want to step up and help support a two zoo reality, instead of leaving it entirely to be funded by Franklin county, then perhaps a future proposal will provide for a more equitable situation.

You obviously didn't read TFA.

The original property tax levy is expiring, and  is 67 percent higher. Maybe that sounds high, but it means a difference of $23 for a house valued at $100,000.

ZOMG! 23 dollars a year!!! Think of all the jobs I could be creating with that 23 dollars a year!!!

Well, that must make you much more of an authority on the subject than the author of TFA, because anyone who lives near something can't help but be an expert on it.

Just like Palin on Russia.

Yes.  It's not that hard to manipulate uninformed people. Some people there are so uninformed they thought it would nearly double their property taxes.

Don't be a . It was a doubling of the taxes allotted to the zoo.

This is the view that I have. I can actually see the site where they wanted to drop in a zoo.

Veteran's Memorial is one of the important issues right now. It needs to be razed and a new facility with higher capacity installed there. The Arnold Classic, one of the largest annual revenue streams to the city, is quickly outgrowing that current facility. That is just one example.

The other is the Riverside parkways increase and reconfiguration of the river back to a natural path with wetlands restored and breakwaters and dams removed for the restoration of the biodiversity of the river which has been stunted and disjointed for decades due to those man made structures in the river.

Those two major projects are already being paid for by property owners such as myself and are seen as a boon to the economy and ecology of Franklin County. Another zoo is just a money sink for the caging of animal entertainment.

Have fun with your interpretation, it's more entertaining to choose the absurd reading of what I said.

Unlike the inane comparison to Sarah Palin and her ignorant awareness of foreign policy  based on the things she actually can't see, and throw that against things I actually can see from my office and the matters that are laid plain in the many periodicals of this city which I a avow myself of daily combined with a visual aid that only added to the discussion and I suppose you could dismiss my word as your prerogative, but I wouldn't advise it.

Zoos are kind of cruel anyways. No matter how "natural" they make the habitat, it is still in a place the animals are not indigenous to.

It's only the zoo portion, which is less than 1 percent.

Fine, you don't agree with the zoo. You don't have to lie and say it will double property taxes though.

I go back and forth.  Yes, they're a bit cruel...but so is living in nature, for a lot of animals.  And well-run zoos DO serve an educational function.

I'm in favor of zoos, but I can definitely see the counter-arguments.

I wonder how much money the Koch brothers spent on this opposition campaign.  For example, could they have spent the same amount of money to set up a foundation for the zoo, thus eliminating the need for a tax levy, and then look like good guys to everybody?

Deep thoughts...

I dunno. Twenty three bucks can buy a lot of bananas. Can't those monkeys get a jerb and quit sponging off hard werking mericans? I'll be they could wash windows easier than the Serbians can. Make them proud that they can buy their own bananas. This is what I know about the monkeys. They ad libbed sometimes and tried to crack the other monkeys up. Not really sure if they played their own musical instruments though. That one guy was a circus boy. He had an elephant named Bimbo. That you can take to the bank, mister.

Franklin County resident here...  Yes, the rubes are dumb enough to think the zoo levy was going to double their total property taxes. I ran into more of these people than I would like to admit.

It's absolutely a blue county.... but, if people don't show up to vote, the Taxed Enough Already group wins. Let this be a warning to everyone when it comes time to elect a senator.

Never been there, but I'd wager it's because there aren't enough visitors.
Taxes are assured income regardless of how popular the zoo is at any given time. They can also be quietly increased to cover unexpected needs.
