Question for all you Star Wars fans:

In Star Wars, the Stormtroopers are a thinly-veiled analogue to Nazi soldiers.
The other day in traffic I saw a car with one of those sticker-family decals on the back window: two big Stormtroopers and three small ones.
All I could think was: this guy sees his family basically like cartoon Nazis? WTF?
Why are they celebrated? How is this acceptable?

What an odd question...

But, what the heck.

Nope - the "Stormtroopers" don't really have any resemblance to the Hitler folks, other than sharing the name. Lucas had a dearth of imagination, and to a 7-year old in 1977, I wouldn't have known what a Nazi stormtrooper was if it crawled up and bit my leg. They're just army guys in silly outfits that make it apparently impossible to aim.

They've got these guys in all kinds of outfits - cold weather, flight suits... desert gear.... Just think of 'em as in basic Khaki, except it's in space-fiberglass.

Think about it - the Real Nazi stormtroopers were the most feared, efficient fighting machine of their time. Star Wars stormtroopers couldn't hit the broad side of the great wall of china, and concuss themselves on low door frames.

Why do people love Daleks?  Why do people love Darth Vader?  Why do people love Joffrey?  We like bad guys, simple as that.

Stormtroopers may be Nazi soldier analogs, but they're wearing distinctive armor, have recognizable attributes (can't shoot their way out of a barn, dumb as a box of hair) and don't act like Nazis (they're not genocidal) - they've moved beyond a 1:1 comparison to Nazis.  Even if they kept any Nazi connotations, who doesn't like seeing Nazis get their comeuppance?  Think of all the films, video games, and other media that have Nazis as bad guys, and how cathartic it is when they are beaten.

Doesn't specify if the planet was actually populated. Could be they just didn't like the rock there, and needed to clear it for a hyperspace bypass.

Dunno - remember, when we first ran into 'em, there wasn't any emperor. Just Van Helsing with computer buttons clipped to his shirt. They weren't elite - the SS were like the Green Berets, the supposed cream O' die Croppen - they were just every soldier you ran into.

But I thought it caused a disturbance in the force as if millions of voices cried out and were suddenly silenced. I could be remembering incorrectly, or assuming too much plot cohesion on the part of the writer

Alderaan was populated, and millions died.

Also, I thought AspectRatio was referring to the armored soldiers, not the guys in charge as he was referencing a decal.  The Imperials ordered the genocide, and Stormtroopers followed through, i.e. Stormtroopers are soldiers, other Imperials are officers and politicians ordering the soldiers around.  It's a narrow view, I admit.  Apologies, it was a weak statement that will lead to fanwankery (are they following orders, etc.).

I'm referring to the Empire and how it represents Nazi Germany, commanders, soldiers, and all.
A family decal of cartoon Hitlers wouldn't be appropriate, but that's what Stormtroopers basically are.

And for all we know, the demolition plans had been on display at the local planning office (in the neighboring star system) for fifty years. There's only so much they can include in a movie.

Fark ate my post, dammit.  Trying to reconstruct:

Sorry for misinterpreting your original intent.  I don't speak for everyone, and one opinion follows:

They're not a 1:1 correlation to Nazis.  They're influenced by Nazis, but they're reinterpretations, not allegories meant to offer a message. They're black and white (pun intended) in morality, sterilized and dehumanized.  We don't need to think of the Nazi soldiers and officers that may have: hated their jobs, loved beer & boobies, had beloved families, followed orders, and believed their viewpoint was the lesser evil.  It's easier to hate Nazis when you think of them as a monolithic institution, and this is distilled into the concept of the Empire - a nameless, faceless wave of ideology, where you're not Private Bob, you're TK421.

We also, as a culture, love our bad guys.  We love to see their dastardly deeds, and we love when they get their comeuppance.

Add to it their cool factor, their presence in pop culture as the epitome of ineptitude, SW fannish tendencies, and hence someone putting a decal on their car.  That person probably isn't surreptitiously supporting Nazism, and is likely unaware of the connotations and original meaning of Stormtrooper.

TL;DR version: they're not Nazis, but they are cool bad guys.

Yeah, that was my thought. He's using them to promote his business, which tends to piss off the BBC and Disney.

I've seen a car around here with a decal family in the back window.

Dad was a Stormtrooper, Mom was Princess Leia holding a blaster, and the three kids were R2-D2, a Jawa, and an Ewok.

Thought it was pretty funny.

For what it's worth, this is actually the nearest petrol station to my office, and it's been this way for...well, years. If I remember correctly, a decade or so, at least. I imagine if they wanted to come and try and tromp around on this guy, they would have done so some time ago.

UK law around trademarks is a bit funky, so I'm assuming they just decided it wasn't worth the bother.

I have been thinking about this recently (I clearly have too much time on my hands). For some reason I gravitate towards the Empire and I am liburl and liburls get. I think for me, the Empire stood for order, stability and peace (in it's own twisted way). Stormtroopers were soldiers and like many other soldiers they were sometimes ordered to do some pretty nasty things. I have to imagine that in their minds they were doing what they thought was the right thing.

Also, they were underdogs. Think of the Tie fighter pilot going up against a fully shielded X-Wing. You have to be a better pilot, or you're dead.

Then I think to myself, "this is all fiction and none of it really matters."
