That's a strange crash. Was almost like a microburst just pushed it down. No violent movements or anything.

civilian aviatio, in general tends to be a rich, older mans hobby nowadays. this gentleman did not start his carreer in barnstorming until his late fifties till he could well afford to do so.

in fact, most of all the money making stunt pilots I have known in my life have all been forty and over years old... the forty somethings being the young'ns. The 20 and 30 something stunt pilots out there have usually been born into the bizness

This is not what you want to see at an air show. A bi-plane crashed here at Travis Air Force Base.

see now, why just assume that conclusion? there is no other reason to go to an air show. I live near an airport, I can watch planes take off and land all day long. it really isn't that exciting.
it's like why watch a NASCAR race?
1) you are a redneck and want to go "whoo-whoo!" whenever Little E leads a lap.
or,
2) you are like the rest of the planet, and record it, and fast forward till a wreck happens.

I met this guy several times. He's was a friend of a friend of mine. Had a hanger in Half Moon Bay that was full of amazing planes. He was in good health, sharp as a tack and physically fit. Not a farmer's market candidate at all.

Too bad that he crashed, wonder what happened. The plane he was flying was beautiful too.

This is one reason I don't go to air shows.

The second reason being my fear of being crashed into.

That had nothing to do with the pilot's age or ability. The plane's tail disintegrated due to aerodynamic flutter because of a mechanical failure. Could have happened just as easily to a 25 year old.

I suspect movie special effects and CGI has made even the Angels unimpressive to to some people, especially those who grew up with those effects. Kind of a shame.

FAA does not allow aerobatic maneuvers over the people at airshows...the crowd line is at least 200 feet from the runway.  The other crash mentioned earlier was a modified P-51 at a race, not performing aerobatics.

Eh? read upthread, I was quoting another Farker's post...but if you're worried, when I met him I called him "Dale".  When I met The King, I called him "Mr. Petty".  I referred to Brad Keselowski as 'Brad', & I referred to Joe Logano as "Joey", which is far better than most Farkers. Please inform me if any other protocols were violated.

2014-05-08 08:35:32 AM
I am a big aviation fan and enjoy airshows, but I could really care less about these low level aerobatic stunts. I prefer prop warbirds and all types of jets.  The biplanes, the pitts specials, extras, etc just bore me, when they fly is when I spend my time checking out the static displays. I used to like low level action by the warbirds, but my views have changed with too many good men and women, and too many airplanes destroyed. Just give me some high speed passes and a few wingovers- I don't need to see low level loops and rolls and the susequent firery crash on you tube.
