Was there a farmers' market in the area?

2014-05-07 05:02:09 PM
That's a strange crash. Was almost like a microburst just pushed it down. No violent movements or anything.

A 77-year-old stunt pilot.
What could possibly go wrong?

2014-05-07 05:11:53 PM
civilian aviatio, in general tends to be a rich, older mans hobby nowadays. this gentleman did not start his carreer in barnstorming until his late fifties till he could well afford to do so.

in fact, most of all the money making stunt pilots I have known in my life have all been forty and over years old... the forty somethings being the young'ns. The 20 and 30 something stunt pilots out there have usually been born into the bizness

No matter how bad-ass you have been in life, as you age you reflexes and decision making skill decline. Lucky he didn't kill anyone else.

This is not what you want to see at an air show. A bi-plane crashed here at Travis Air Force Base.

see now, why just assume that conclusion? there is no other reason to go to an air show. I live near an airport, I can watch planes take off and land all day long. it really isn't that exciting.
it's like why watch a NASCAR race?
1) you are a redneck and want to go "whoo-whoo!" whenever Little E leads a lap.
or,
2) you are like the rest of the planet, and record it, and fast forward till a wreck happens.

same with an airshow "hey look an upside down airplane!" thrills.

I met this guy several times. He's was a friend of a friend of mine. Had a hanger in Half Moon Bay that was full of amazing planes. He was in good health, sharp as a tack and physically fit. Not a farmer's market candidate at all.

Too bad that he crashed, wonder what happened. The plane he was flying was beautiful too.

This is one reason I don't go to air shows.

The second reason being my fear of being crashed into.

He had a P-51 as well as a few old war planes and race planes. His hanger is right down the road from me in Half Moon Bay CA

"Cutting the ribbon" is a rather tame maneuver compared to some of the shiat I watched stunt pilots do in front of my control tower.

The crash was fairly non-violent as plane crashes go. They sure took their time getting to him too, it seems, from what the clip provided showed.

My thoughts too.  Though the people up at the runway - the ribbon holders - may have seen that there was no reason to hurry.

That had nothing to do with the pilot's age or ability. The plane's tail disintegrated due to aerodynamic flutter because of a mechanical failure. Could have happened just as easily to a 25 year old.

I was there both days (I live nearby, and it was free). The day before was windier, but it was a bit windy on Sunday, the day of the crash. Slow emergency response time... sad stuff.

Well, don't let the Followup tag, or the fact the story is about the NTSB get in the way of posting an irrelevant image.

After all, your failure to express snark is what's important.

I love airshows and go to many. Have seen some bad crashes. Always have a place to run. Never sit in the bleachers. Inverted low flying always very risky. Last year a biplane went in while inverted with a wingwalker because the engine sputtered. Glad I didn't see it. Love flyi g hate crashes

I suspect movie special effects and CGI has made even the Angels unimpressive to to some people, especially those who grew up with those effects. Kind of a shame.
