Stannis has been referring to himself as King since the beginning of season 2. So has Robb and Renly and Joffrey and probably a bunch of other people. You're fine.

/Though yeah, you should stay away from GoT stuff until you're more caught up.

I wasn't a huge fan of Sunday's episode.  The shows ok and I power watched all 3 season in a few days to get caught up and the show seems to drag on too much.

Compared to how some of the books drag on, the show is moving at light speed.

I think maybe they should have waited to the end of the season for the Purple Wedding- later episodes are hurting after seeing that evil sumbastiche Joffrey get what's coming to him.

I'm pretty sure there's a huge event or two at the end of the season that will end that unhurt.

I've been looking forward to this for a while.  It's the one thing I know hasn't been spoiled for my wife.  I hope they don't omit this character a la Coldhands.

They're all ranked King, the ones still alive anyway and Dany but she's a Queen. Tell one of them otherwise and see what they do to you.

I'm not sure why they all want the Iron Throne though, that doesn't seem to work out well for anyone. The only one with any sense is Balon Greyjoy because he seems to prefer minding his own damn business instead of trying to rule the world.

I watched the Oliver show last night for the first time. I enjoyed it but mostly it was the Daily Show with no bleeps.

So I tried to find his new show, only to discover what I'm sure everyone here knew: it's on HBO, so there's no streaming online for folks who don't either pay shiatloads of money or "borrow" a login from someone else who does.

Sorry, Mr. Oliver. I like you a lot, but goodbye for now.

Keep in mind that Oliver wasn't just a correspondent - but one of TDS' lead writers for years. He's probably starting from his comfort zone, and doing the things he wasn't allowed to do by CC/Viacom. The new show will find its own footing, as long as HBO sticks with it for a little while.

HBO has stuck with Bill Maher for a long time so the chances are good that Oliver will be around for a few seasons.

Can someone tell me why Stannis is considered the one true king?  I assume it's because he is (was?) the oldest of the brothers after King Robert?

John Oliver's show is good, but not really clicking yet.  I do like the format - all the week's news in one week, so there's more quality than quantity, but a lot of his jokes are falling flat.  There was one joke about comparing Obama imposing sanctions on Russia to one of the major pizza chains stuffing crust with cheese.  I had a "WTF was that" moment.

That would be correct, as Cersei's kids aren't legitimate heirs (being secret Lannisters). That's why Joffery was so keen on killing Robert's bastards. Plus I think Stannis was older than Robert anyway.

The world in GoT has an eliptical orbit; seasons aren't regular. Sometimes a season can last for years. None of the younger characters has even known a winter. So, calling someone a 'summer child' is saying that they've never faced harsh reality or been tested in any way. So, when they complain, it's about things older folk consider foolish and trivial.

tl;dr: It's the Westeros version of 'first world problems'

As an Englishman, his perspective is different.

In the first episode he called out our mass media, which is a very TDS thing to do, but he called them out over ignoring the largest democratic election on the planet in India.

It's good to see somebody stop ignoring the rest of the world right up until they are tying to gin up a reason to kill brown people.

Balon's a fool.  I like Stannis.  He's a humorless plank of a man.  But he knows who he is, no-nonsense and pragmatic and I think that's why he keeps his smuggler buddy around.

So most likely a book snob or a "I've watched it since release so I'm better than you" snob gotcha.

"Oh, my sweet summer child," Old Nan said quietly, "what do you know of fear?
Fear is for the winter, my little lord, when the snows fall a hundred feet
deep and the ice wind comes howling out of the north. Fear is for the long
night, when the sun hides its face for years at a time, and little children
are born and live and die all in darkness while the direwolves grow gaunt and
hungry, and the white walkers move through the woods"

Stannis came less than a year after Robert was born.
