The child may have been left alone for perhaps 20 minutes before being discovered,

OH MY GOD CALL OUT THE MARINES!!!!

Actually, this is the reason for the whole sorry affair:
Both parents work full-time, he said.

"They are trying, but their paychecks just don't go far enough," Norton said.

If both parents work full time and yet can't afford day-care...babby gets left alone in the house for a few minutes while mom takes dad to work because she doesn't want to wake him up and drag him down to the car. That's life on two paychecks below minimum wage.

namegoeshere: Boo_Guy: A closet is really just a small room,  is their a law or policy for how small a room can be before it's considered wrong to put a sleeping baby in it?

/no farks given

As far as what makes a bedroom, it has to have a second point of egress. If the doorway is blocked by fire, there needs to be a window to go out.

Which actually is why leaving a sleeping tot alone even just to run a quick errand is such a horrendously bad idea. If there was a fire or other emergency, that baby was far too young to get out of the building. That IMO is the age at which a child should be left alone for even a few minutes: If there is an emergency such as fire, does the child know what to do, and are they old/mature enough to reliably do it.

Meh.

There was a young mother near me that went out clubbing several nights a week and she left her baby alone back home sleeping all the time.

Doing it once or twice for a few minutes just to make life a litter easier is one thing,  doing it for hours several times every week to go party is screwed up.

The dad works on the same street as he lives, that's probably close enough range for a baby monitor

I more shocked that they used a measured judgement to help the couple instead of immediately destroying their lives.
