They'd do it in half the time, and stick you with 5 times as much paperwork.  And you'd need to call in a favor from somebody's uncle.

I make a concerted effort in each area. Schlubmitter, OTOH, had the words 'Ukraine' and 'Ukrainian' sprinkled generously throughout TFA and still managed to spell 'Ukrainian' incorrectly twice in the headline. He deserves what he gets.

There's a fine line between being snarky, and just being a dick.

That comma was quite unnecessary, and for the sake of parallelism you should have used a second adjective rather than "a dick". 'Dickish' would probably be colloquially acceptable.

So, let's count a bit here.

Last month there were somewhere around 200 armed separatists in Slavansk.

Ukrainian army have killed 34, including, if you are to believe Ukrainian media, their Russian army leader ('Strelok', 'Shooter'), his second in command ('Abhwer') and sniper ('Romashka', 'Daisy').

They have also completely blocked the city, preventing any new incursions from the Russian border.

So, now there are 800 armed separatists in Slavansk on a single roadblock. That, please keep in mind, with the city completely blocked, as also with closed borders, so those are not exactly Russian army, no?

All the information is from Ukrainian media, widely reported.

It's not that ALL of the anti-Ukrainian-government insurgents are Russian military. It's that there are Russian SF soldiers in Ukraine at all that's the problem (and there are). If it weren't for Putin, little or none of this "spontaneous" uprising would have occurred.

Now, there are legit reasons for Russian speakers in Ukraine to have a problem with the post-coup government, but that's a lesser issue than Putin's naked power grab.

Maybe he met this really nice Russian, er Eastern Ukrainian girl and offered to carry her rifle for her.  You can tell by the photo that he's already thinking about spending some time with her.  Perhaps after chow.  "You know, I carried two guns today.  My muscles are a bit, er, stiff.  Could you rub your soft, freedom fighting hands on my shoulders?  Why yes, they are extremely muscled and powerful.  I was professional boulder mover before the liberation began.  I could move 50kg boulders by myself.  Just point to the boulder and where you want it and I could move it.  I went to Boulder Mover Polytechnic and graduated top in my class.  There are no boulders in my village of Vransticnakinaptiskap.  Are you familiar with this village?  Visitors often remark that it is incredibly free of boulders.  When we have fought and won, I hope to go back to boulder moving.  And what about you, my dear?  Are you aroused by boulders too?"

Sure. It'll take 3 times as long, and in the end, Latvia will somehow have taken over, so they'll have to scrap & redo the entire revolution.

But hey, they'll save a ton of money up to that point.

That's what I mean. Since the media is calling them "insurgents" instead of "rebels" that must mean they are the bad guys.

You won't need to work anymore if you're laid off. Target's CEO was just effectively laid off and he's getting around $26 million as a result. And he oversaw and pushed practices that led to tens of millions of Target customers credit card information being stolen. Based on this, unless you've killed the Pope, I can only assume you'll be getting a few million when you're laid off.

Not arguing with that, although I don't think any of those original guys were Russian military proper. Likely mercenaries, paid by either Putin or Putin-affiliated Ukrainian oligarchs.

However, now that we HAVE a popular uprising, somehow I don't think that killing those 800 locals would lead to anything good.

I was thinking that the forces supporting separatists will have to struggle to keep uprising going until elections. Now I think that separatists will keep Slavansk and surrounding region in their hands for at least 3-4 months more, possibly spreading further through Luhansk and Donetsk, growing larger and larger from the influx of locals.

*sigh* adding that to economic problems and leadership problems, I think Ukraine is seriously on the way to a catastrophy. Default and federalization/separation doesn't look as worst case scenarios anymore...

And where does one get large-caliber weapons and mortars? They're not exactly off-the-shelf type weapons.

Imagine the rise in tiny violin sales if China started nibbling away at the other end of Russia or worked out fancy deals with Georgia inviting them to military cooperation along with Kazakhstan, etc. but without Russia this time. It'd be a shame to wave bye to the troops leaving to defend a border, thousands of miles away.

For those interested, this link goes to a Forbes article written by a guy ("I cover domestic and world economics from a free-market perspective...") who's previous cause was defeating Obamacare, in addition to adding a "thoughtful" voice to the Food Stamp debate ("Americans are obese.  Food stamps are the problem.")  Warning: he's at Neocon factor 3.  Unable to find a screenshot of said "real" results, but it's good enough for me to jump into the fray and call for a land war in eastern Europe.  Yippi-kai-yay!!!

We have farking C&C intercepts from Moscow to the troops in the field, We've some EC-130s on the Polish border that have capabilities that make the NSA's look feeble by comparison

Same place separatists got 6 tanks - Ukrainian Army.:)

Everything is for sale.

Of course, _somebody_ have to provide tens of thousands of dollars, may be hundreds, to purchase it, but considering that separatists-supporting Ukrainian oligarch Rinat Akhmetov is alone worth $11 billions, I think the money for good cause will find itself.
