Having been in the hospitality industry, and often mixed in with the entertainment industry with a fair number of clubs, there are some performers who JUST as douchey as you expect, and then even go past those expectations. Some folks, do surprise you by being far more decent folks. Taylor Swift? She was a normal gal, and goofy. Willy Nelson? Even cooler than I was expecting. Steve Earle? Far more cool in person. Fred Eaglesmith? MUCH cooler in person. The Bobs? FAR MOAR annoying in person than you can even begin to contemplate, with sound checks that went on for over an hour, repeating the same f*cking verse "Get on the party train" at varying pitches, keys, and volumes. THAT was torture enough, but then they were douchey about their meals and the dressing room, EVERY time they came to the club. The Neilds? They're Western Mass locals, and much beloved by the sweater/aging hipster crowd are absolutely terrible humans, and make life more difficult for everyone around them. The Black Eyed Peas? Will.i.am and Fergie and Taboo were so damn kind to their fans, and so supportive of their crew, and Sofa King positive to everyone at our venue, including security, the janitorial staff, and cooks, and servers, and just the simple runners, that I can't say more nice things about them as people. Warren Zevon? He was a damn sight quieter than you might have heard about, and super professional. Mose Allison? Far cooler in person. Wynton Marsalis? A hard ass on engineers, and he damn near drove our guy nuts when he did his residency, but he was man enough to admit that Bob KNEW the room, and after the first performance, he let the man do his thing, and that was very cool to see. Cat Power? Even doucheier in person.

In the end, when you work with entertainers, you go in with some expectations, and often they're entirely wrong. Some are far better humans than you would expect. Some, are just folks doing a dang job, are on the road, and just looking to set up shop before taking a nap, and some are even bigger jerks than you'd expect. Moxy Fruvvous I'm looking straight at them. Not good people in the slightest. Folks like Bieber are insulated from the world, by the folks who are making hefty profit. Like Celine Dion. And that means that they are insulated from the consequences of their actions. Some folks are just born asshats, and just get bigger...

Not me. I always enjoy his 1-2 hour interviews on Howard Stern. He is funny, honest, self-deprecating, quick to laugh (though the laugh is a bit much sometimes). I like him more than most celebrities I hear in interviews. Seems like he'd be really fun to hang out with.

What the hell is the matter with you? Celebrities are entertainers, not your friends. They are meant to take us to place that we can't travel on our own through their singing, dancing, or acting. You don't judge them on whether or not you want to hang out with them.

That's how you pick a President.

Let's just say that involves trying to get some of my underage employees on their tour bus, and a narrowly averted asswhoopin' on their manager. They were already on my list of folks before they tried to get some of my runners to their hotel, but at least the girls had the sense to tell me that they'd been invited back there. The tour manager was never allowed back into the venue after that. Their next tour manager had the good sense to keep the guys out of the club except for sound check. They garnered a LOT of ill will between the engineers, the event staff, and the front and back of the house with douchey behavior across the spectrum. Probably made worse, by their understated Canadian manners. It's almost Southern in its backhanded asshattery. In nearly 15 years of bouncing, I have rarely wanted to throttle a human as thoroughly as that particular tour manager, and that even includes the guy who stabbed me at Pearl Street when I was on duty at a skinhead show.

I have to agree with you on a lot of those people. But the biggest coont I ever ha the displeasure of meeting was Rihanna. Her first album had come out and she was doing concerts in malls and she was pulling this 17 year old diva act. She was just being a coont to everybody. Before her the biggest ass I had meet was teh one hit wonder Willa Ford, but at least her sister apologized for her being a coont.

Musically, I hate the Black Eyed Peas. But the more I have read and seen about Will.i.am, the more I like the guy. He seems to be very humble and does a lot in the way of giving back.  His music isn't for me, but you can't deny his market savvy.

I'm getting really uneasy about the level of mean-spirited humor and hate being piled on a twenty year old who is obviously having an extremely difficult time growing up in the public eye.

Seth Rogen's abilities seem fairly pedestrian, although he has had a few moments of comedy gold. As far as he himself goes, he seems like a pretty cool guy in terms of someone I don't actually have to spend time with.

Beiber on the other hand can't OD quickly enough.

He wasn't born this way - he chose this lifestyle, and he chooses to act like a super-spoiled brat.  He's protected from the consequences of his actions by his wealth and his handlers, despite pulling stunts that would land anyone else in jail or prison.  All of that makes him kind of intolerable.

Don't worry, he'll go Defcon-Britney Nuclear and then we'll have months if not years of 'I don't know what possibly went wrong' media hand-wringing over it.

This. While I am not proud of everything I did at his age, I was never a huge douche bag. I never went around sucker punching people, or just behaving that way.  I have no doubt that wealth and fame would have changed me to a degree, but never in that way. He chooses to be this way. He is not a victim. He has opportunity that most will never even imagine and he blows it.

I don't think Rogen is breaking any stereotype.  It's a great Canadian past time to deal with a tremendous douchebag and then complain to others what a tremendous douchebag the guy was.

Sure, we're polite to you whether you're a nice guy or a jackass, but it's not like we don't make a value judgement.

Howard Stern is a bigger douche nozzle than Beiber and Seth combined.
