That's the difference bet. the Royals and the Nationals in a nutshell.

In 2007 the Royals hit 102 home runs. As a team. All year.

I'm not saying Jose Abreu will hit more home runs than the Royals this year. I'm just saying, if you've got $100 burning a hole in your pocket, it might not be the worst prop bet you ever made.

The Kansas City Royals are the most often mentioned team on Fark.
Why?

I doubt they get more threads then the Yankees.

Our "Power" hitters will be doing good if they get 20-25 in a year, but Hosmer just hit his first of the year last night, Moustakas has 4 (and leads the team) but is hitting .150ish and platooning at 3rd, his days with KC are probably coming to a close.  And Gordon and Butler only have one each.  Throw in Salvador Perez and there is enough power hitters to get more hr's, Kaufmann Stadium notwithstanding, but they are just in a power slump.

Oh, and they are 0 for May too, the month that has been a bane to their chances of contending lately.

They're not even close to the Yankees, Boston, Dodgers, Angels, either Chicago team, or Texas. Cleveland is probably even higher. The only time I ever see KC mentioned is in terms of the lack of power.

/doesn't hate KC

KC's been the sleeper pick to win a wild card or the AL Central for a lot of writers for the past 3 years. Sorry, the Central is Detroit's for the next 3 years.

But this is the post-post-post-post-post hype year for Gordon! He's due!

On another note, Abreu is a beast. Nice to be a rookie when you're 27!

Me to Boston fan: I'm a Royals fan

Him: Who?

Me: Kansas City

Him: They have a team?

Me: Not for 30 years.

I've never seen run the diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on series rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address,
In a torn-up town, no post game envy

But every team's like gold gloves, home runs, doubles to the right-field
Mud stains, make it rain, long balls to the outfield
We don't care, we're going yard in our dreams.

We play for the Royals (Royals)
Winning is not in our blood,
Home Runs ain't for us.
This team has no kind of buzz.

Since the start of 2011, Alex Gordon is 6th in WAR among all OF.

I think he's doing ok.

Plus 3 Gold Gloves and an All Star nod.

WAR = a stat that can effectively be used in a baseball argument.

Gold Glove and/or All-Star nod = not so much.

....  depending on the audience.  If you need 20 minutes to explain WAR, no one's listening anymore.

People get GG and All-Star nods

I love baseball. I know what WAR means, no problem. I do not understand what it takes to win a Gold Glove.

Pretty sure it requires more popularity than an All-Star nod, actually.

Between more aging for the Tigers lineup (most of whom are on the wrong side of the aging curve already) and pretty much zilch in the minors, and Scherzer probably gone after this year, I wouldn't bank on that.  Even though something has gone horribly wrong if they don't win the division by at least 10 games this year.
