I think retro-gaming nostalgia is getting out of hand.

I would cock punch any hipster I saw possessing this expensive crap in their skinny jeans until they started spewing blood. Then I would go after their face until my hands were torn and bloodied by their sandpapery hipster beards and ironic glasses.

Then I would force them to play Pro Wrestling and beat the sh*t out of them with Starman for hours. Then I would tie them to a chair and make them beat Battletoads with New Kids on the Block playing loudly in the background on repeat.

Sadly, I don't know any of these people on a personal basis.

Retail price is $139.99. From what I see on Hyperkin's Facebook, if you pre ordered on Amazon or Newegg before the increase they are going to honor the original price

Well, still worth the price.

I'll stick with my PS Vita, where for $200 I can play two year-old Borderlands 2.

Collectors will not want this thing, they want a real NES. Retro gamers will not want this thing, they can play all of their NES games on their Wii, PC, etc through emulation. This ugly overpriced piece of tin has no market.

A zip file with every NES ROM ever made is only about 150mb. Every SNES ROM is about 1.5gb. Genesis is about 500mb. Uncompressed size is probably somewhat bigger, but you can fit basically every pre-N64 ROM from Nintendo and Sega onto a 8gb SD card with room to spare. No huge hard drive necessary.

I still occasionally fire up an emulator to play Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior games (Dragon Quest now I suppose), Base Wars, and Blaster Master. Can't imagine spending half a grand for such a device. It also says that it upscales to 1080p? LOOK AT THE BEAUTIFUL PIXELS

2014-05-06 11:16:47 AM
Nice looking, very expensive, does the same job as a lot of other hardware.

Looks like they are taking their cues from "audiophile" manufacturers.

2014-05-06 11:21:03 AM
FTFA: the Nt's HDMI adapter (sold separately, the rascals) can upscale the console's output to a lovely 1080p - making your classic video game collection the sharpest it's ever looked.

Uhhh, that's nice, but sharpness is a detriment for old games.  To get a good experience it needs to be blurry and have scanlines.  Good emulators have an NTSC filter that reproduces the experience down to chromatic aberration.  Yeah, yeah, NERDS!!!, I know.  Whatever.  It's not really recapturing the experience if you're looking at perfect blocky pixels on an HD display.

You're a fool, then.  There were a lot of great games for the NES, that set the standards for every platform that followed.

That said, this thing is an overpriced gimmick that seems designed to separate a fool from his money.

That would be cool except gaming companies would get pissy about it, but what's stopping these guys from adding an SD card slot on the side so we could load in all the roms ourselves.  Now THAT would be cool.  Still couldn't justify the price tag though.

The Famicom is the Japanese version of the NES, but the cartridges are not directly compatible.  NES cartridges have a wider slot with 14 more pins, to accommodate the 10NES lockout chip that prevents unlicensed games from being used.  Likely the two slots are for NES and Famicom cartridges.

/if you want to use Famicom cartridges on your NES, there are a number of adapters you could buy
//or you could dig up an old Gyromite cartridge and hope you get lucky

Hah, I just started playing that on my phone. I bought the sixaxis app that you use to connect a ps3 controller to your android, and it made it so much better.

Gotta rig up some method of strapping the phone above the controller that won't damage the phone...

Different tastes. I always hated the NES. Terrible, ugly, hideously overpriced games and awkward controllers with corners that dig into your hands. As far as I'm concerned the C64, Spectrum and Amstrad CPC pissed all over it from a great height.

But that's me. Quite a lot of people seem to like it. I don't get it myself, but then again I don't understand the appeal of Justin Bieber, reality TV, guns or bukkake, but they all have their fans as well.
