From Wikipedia:

According to Gormley, the significance of an angel was three-fold: first, to signify that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked for two centuries; second, to grasp the transition from an industrial to information age, and third, to serve as a focus for our evolving hopes and fears.

Yes, totally does that for me...

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you cheaper, fresher bread, which shall be to all people the basis of divine sammiches.

I'm no art critic... but imma agree with you on this one. If they want people to respect the art work so it's not used for advertisements and what not, create better artwork.

Of course they knew people were going to be angry. They DGAF. They're getting killed by the competition and wanted free advertising. Now they're getting it. They're betting that in this economy more people will buy their cheaper bread than will boycott the product because of this stunt.

I'd boycott. There's already too much rewarded dickishness in the world.

I don't know, I kind of like it. It's an interesting combination of organic and technological forms. But that's just me.

It's is beautiful in person. A stunning part of the Northeast landscape and much beloved.

I find it inspiring. It stands above the colliery where my father in law worked the pit ponies as a teenager.
